I would probably agree, if they made the car lighter in the process

Awd+low rpm torque means instant launch out of corners without staggered tires and nannies.
Maybe then BMW could tune some of the piggish understeer out of the chassis. |

The 135 is a bit of a pig already...AWD is not going to help that.
With that said, I would probably buy it as an option.

Hmm, I would hope so.
Its not so bad in the city, but when I leave the city to head north in the winter, Canadian roads are s**t! X-drive would be amazing... Plus, the benefits on the track if they shed some weight out of the beast! |

I'd seriously consider an AWD 135i depending on what the weight penalty was and how much it effected fuel economy.
I don't think AWD is a requirement, but once you start increasing the power on these cars they're sevearly traction limited by the tire sizes we can run. On a JB3 car first gear is damn near useless, and it will break loose in second from time to time as the boost comes on. Then there's also the winter driving to consider. |

the Evo and STI seem to have done quite well with AWD.....I think the 135i could be a nice competitor to them.

AWD adds significant weight and drivetrain loss that hinders performance and efficiency at the track or otherwise. There are plenty of xDrive offerings for those that feel they need it(far less than those that actually do) or the misguided who feel it aids in performance. The world doesn't need an xDrive 1er although many of the aforementioned would still buy them. The world could benefit from a lighter 1er with an LSD and a better suspension- well that's what's on my wish list anyway. Lastly but not leastly; BMW tunes Xdrive cars for inclement weather rather than performance because it assumes that is the primary reason for owning an AWD car in this class- not rallying like the Subie or Evo.

In the coupe form...never, I've had nothing but x-drive/quattro before my 1er. AWD is great security in terms of traction, but draws too much from performance to justify the need in my climate. Additionally, BMW always screws up the suspension/wheel options in their x-drive cars...like Monterra said, they're no longer sport tuned --> FAIL
Although, give me a 5-door x-drive 135i, and I'm all over it. Some added utility as a daily year-round driver and ski transport. Like an STi with class, style and luxury. win win win. BUT...must give me true m-sport suspension option and staggered 18s. |
