That's not that bad, is it?
yeah, it's bad if the keys are in the car, and you've left it unlocked

The car is not locking itself, but it makes a similar sound by itself a few minutes after I get out.

Haven't noticed it as much in the BMW, but my '03 Passat did it pretty loudly. Always wondered what it was. I also noted that it only made the noise once if you opened the door several times over a short period.

I have heard this sound as well.....
though not when locking or unlocking the car. It seems that when I go to open the trunk with the remote, unless I hold down the trunk button on the remote, I get the "swooshclik" sound first. Then after I hit the trunk remote button a second time, the trunk opens. If I just hold the button down, both of these things happen one after the other.

It sounds like my refridgerator when I get water through the door dispenser. Whenever i open any of the doors or the trunk, it's like a pshhhhhhh. And yes I have had plenty of cars with power everything, if it's the solenoid it different then any one I have ever heard.

Is this sound from the front or the back of the car?

Not questioning your observations but that seems like a silly thing for VW to program the car to do. might have something to do with the quality problems they were/are having
Itīs not such a bad idea at all. 15 years ago VW were the first to start diesel engine ingiter plug heating the moment you opened the door. It took away some of the waiting period the driver until then had to endure before the diesel engine could be started. Itīs standard on most diesel powered cars nowadays. Itīs a brilliant fix for a until then problem. Nowadays, with direct injection diesels, the preheating period is a lot shorter, but the trick is still used. On the old type non-direct injection diesels, the preheating period could take up to 1 minute before the car could be started. So shaving 10-30 seconds of that time (opening the door, taking your coat of, putting it on the passenger seat, getting in, getting comfortable, buckling up, putting the key into the ignition) was simply brilliant engineering.

Btw. itīs not limited to diesels or VWīs. My E46 SMG would fire up the electric hydraulics pump of the SMG the moment I unlocked the car with the remote. The SMG system needed to be pressurized to move the clutch so the car could be started. So to minimize waiting time the first pressuring was coupled to unlocking the car. Again a very good idea. On the SMG the high pitched whine of the pump was so loud, some people were seriously irritated when I unlocked my car.

My X3 would start spinning the CD in the radio after opening the door.

When I get into my car, I hear the steering wheel unlock. It's most likely the comfort access registering I have the key, and hence getting the car ready to start... I haven't heard any other noises...but I will keep an ear open for them :-)

Loving my car tho...woo000t

In mine it sounds like it is coming from somewhere under the dash near the instrument cluster. Sounds sort of like a baffle moving in the air handling system to me.

The car only locks itself when you unlock it but do not open a door. Or if you start driving. In both cases itīs difficult to have the keys inside with yourself outside. You canīt even lock the dirvers door while itīs open. So contrary to that very strange logic that american cars have (locking button on the inside of the door to be pressed when leaving the car, with or without key), itīs quite difficult to lock yourself out of a BMW. Impossible actually with CA. (Iīll say unless someone finds a wickedly stupid way of proceeding)

I think I have heard the same thing too coming from that area under the dash. I have a feeling it's the "residual heat" feature that probably resets a vent flap when you open the door to get into the car.

The sound you hear is the automatic climate control motors doing a self test of the vents every few cycles. Read this in the manual of my e46.

I hear a sound in my Jetta that I was thinking may be a seatbeat pre-tensioner winding up.

For those with iDrive/navigation, it's the nice lady getting up out of bed ready to assist us with directions.

Seatbelt pre-tensioners are usually small explosive charges that only fire when the safety system tells them to do so! When they fire - they pull the seat belt tighter to stop you moving as far!

Most seatbelts also have a fold sewn into the webbing which unfolds when a certain amount of force is applied to the seatbelt! This helps prevent your body from decelerating too quickly in an accident!

Sorry for being a bit but kinda interesting and important!

That is exactly how I would describe the sound I heard in my car. The funny thing is that I heard it while polishing the rear passanger wheel. It actually startled me and I started looking around the garage to see if it was something else. Then it happened again with the driver's rear wheel. I thought it may have something to do with a runflat sensor.
