Vibration when upshifting?

When I rev up to roughly 5000rpm and up shift (paddle shifters) in 2nd - 4th gears, there is a quick vibration. It's annoying.

My first though was a heat shield or something.

Any ideas?

Is it repeatable every time?

I mentioned in another thread that I have something very similar. When I am upshifting somewhat aggressively, I get a repeatable buzzing/vibration in every gear around 3000rpm. I agree - it is annoying.

I cannot pinpoint where the buzzing is coming from and it only last for 1 or 2 seconds until I shift. Sometimes it sounds like it's behind me and other times it sounds like it's in front of me and near the passenger side. I have not attempted to get someone else in the car to help me nail it down yet, mostly because I just haven't had the chance.

For me, it's happened since mile 1 of the new car. I attribute it to the PE causing it at certain frequencies or something like that, but I don't know for certain.

I have the PE as well. Can you hear it with the windows down? Everything sounds normal with windows down, granted there is wind noise. It's only noticeable with windows up.

I have a PE on my manual 135i and it doesn't make this kind of rattle. Only nice popping and gurgling type sounds.

OP - since you can repeat the noise... just show it to your SA or better yet the tech who will be working on your car. I am sure they could find the cause since you can repeat the noise.

I would look under your car at the exhaust. It might be something as simple as a stretched or broken exhaust hanger. I would also look at the exhaust for any shinny marks where it could be making contact with the body of the car. The rear X-brace would be my best guess where it could contact the car's body/chassis.

The clamps that join the y-pipe to the mids could also be loose. Tighten them to 45Nm.

You might also check the engine tray. There is a heat shield built into it that comes awfully close to down pipes/cats. You could be making contact here - especially if someone botched reinstalling the under tray after an oil change.
