ALL M cars have had varying levels of output, but they've all had ONE thing in common. M-derived suspension/chassis, namely a LSD which is exclusive to M cars.

Don't have a M LSD or Differential? Not a M.
Have one? M
I'm not sure why your rant is addressed to me? I have never said the 1M is a 135is and my post was actually advocating for the 1M. So chill out with the "stupid" calling.

The last thing they needed was to tell everyone the new middle model of the 3er had almost as much HP and way more torque than the crown jewel - aka M3. So... BMW underated the 335i engine. 300 HP but it was more like 330 HP. The e46 M3 was 333 HP.

So... now we have this new 1M// 340 PS. BMW again finds itself in the uncomfortable position of having a M3 sibling with simular HP level.
Nice theory - except this time the M3 sibling has a very different HP level. 340 plays 420.

I too am curious about the 1M WHP, but doubt will be significantly different than advertised.

Hey guys, for the people complaining about the HP, it's probably underrated like the 135i N54 was.

If it ends up running 13.2 1/4's at sea level, why bother? Along with good handling it would be nice to have more punch. The 135 should have been much lighter. This HP game to not outshine the upper level models is a PITA. Mercedes did it too.

I am still looking for something to ultimately replace my SLK32. It may not be the best handling car on the road but it does pretty good especially compared to other cars when running on less than perfect pavement. It easily ran high 12's box stock with the air on.

I don't know why anyone would be impressed with the power output of the 1M in current form. Sure you can mod it and get more but then most dealers are going to nail you if you have a warranty claim.

It's pretty sad that the addition of LSD makes a car an "M" for some of you. The 335i and 135i should have it as standard equipment anyway. Just another way of BMW charging for something that really should have been standard equipment in the first place...

You can't tell me that even with those of you who claim the stock HP is enough don't secretly desire more. Why not have more and allow the (hopefully) great chassis/suspension tuning to take advantage of it? It really needs to go on a diet. It ways more than a Golf GTI which has a lot more room and even that car is porky.

The 1 series M coupe should have been about a 3,000 pound car max and had in the upper 300 HP range. The would have had an runaway sales success on their hands if they kept it under 55k. As it is I almost never see any 135 or 128 on the road. Maybe I am missing the point. They cost as about as much as the 335, they didn't seem to be any faster or better handling than the 335 yet they are far less versatile. The 1 series M coupe is more of the same. More like another ho-hum attempt from BMW to pry a few more dollars from people's wallets without really giving that much more in return. This was a car I was really waiting for but what a letdown from what it could have been.

I've been a long time BMW owner but not a rabid fanatic. I have a BMW motorcycle in the garage as well. I am definitely not a hater of their product but they really have seemed to have lost their way. Looking at some of the hideously styled monstrosities that came out of their styling garage and it is a wonder anyone bought them. It seem they are playing more to their current fanboy base than trying to attract newcomers to the marque.

Not necessarily larger turbos, but tune for more responsiveness over the other N54s. I know the lighter flywheel will help, but the specs is exactly the same as the Z4iS so I can't actually see any difference between the two. They slapped a M badge on the engine, and I would like to know what they have done to make it different to the other iS.

I don't think it is right to call something M tuned if all they have done is put better cooling.

I know it is certainly a drive train improvement - it would be nice even to have something minor unique to this car.

It comes back down to are we willing to pay full M price for it. Typically you pay over 50% more for a M here in Aus, if it is like the UK at 30%, then it would be acceptable.

It's a little hard to explain and compare. There is no doubt that the 135i will smoke the E30 M3 at the track. The modified 135i has a lot of mechanical grip, but no LSD. Overall, very predictable but there is still a hint of understeer.

I've had my E30 for a year and I have wanted one for a long time. I felt like I needed to own one to experience for myself why people claim it is the best M3 ever built (although not the fastest). It really wasn't until I owned the car for a few months and got use to driving it that I was able to push it just enough to experience the magic of the E30 M3 chassis. It is so very predictable and in many ways gives me a bigger grin than the faster 135i. I will sell the 135i, the M3 is a keeper.

Now, take the M3 and modify the suspension and put a ~275hp 2.5 liter S14 in it to even the stakes and I really have no doubt which car would be better.

I just choose to fully question purchasing a new 1M while I have my car the way it is now(not to mention owing a little under 18k on my current note). Since I have done so many things to it I am just not sure it would be worth it to get rid of. Only things for me that are different is a bit of weight (can fix that with lighter wheels), LSD (aftermarket options), bodykit(to each their own I still like the performance kit better), suspension (plenty of options there), and a true LSD (again aftermarket)...all together I would still save money I think if I kept the E82......

The more I think about this car the more I like it. It's very similar to the E46 in size, weight, and hp (more torque which is good ). I don't think people should complain about weight because that wasn't an issue with the E46 and most people loved that car.

To the people who think that this car should be more than the Z4 35is because of its engine just remember that you get more with this car for what will probably be $15k less. It should also be faster than the Z4 as that weighs more than 240 lbs. more even though the 1M lacks the DCT.

As far as the 1M lacking power (which I don't think it does), I think Dinan would love to get their hands on this car as it's a tuners dream. You could easily add a CF intake to add a few extra hp; then there is a larger intercooler, CF intake manifold, an ECU flash, exaust, etc. This car could easily hit 380 hp no problem with these mods, under warranty. Only BMW would prevent this from happening so it remains to be seen. I personally don't think it lacks power. I mean how much power do you need on a daily basis? Only at track day would you want more but how often does anyone do those? One or two a month? It will be fast and fun for a few twisties on the way to and from work. It will be a great occasional track car with everyday driveability. I am really looking forward to this car for being a solid, fun little car. For the price, I don't think there will be anything else better out there.

BMW is not going to warranty one of these with a flash, be it Dinan or not. Shit we were scared of putting just catless downpipes on my girls 335i with no tune. BMW seems to be worse then other manufacturers in terms of denying warranty claims because of mods.

Also, there are lots of cars in the 55k range or less that are fun. If you wanna stick with BMW I'd rather have a 335is or a used e90/92 M3

No doubt this will be a fun little car, and good looking for sure! Just kinda lacks in the power department. I guess people will say it's not how powerful it is, it's how you use it.. Kinda like guys with a small...

I remember reading somewhere that the N54 was better than the N55 cause it was built to be a 400hp engine. But made production only at "300" due to a detune. I believe that is true because of the fact that people have done very little to the 300hp N54 and made it into a M3 killer. So this 1M comes out with 335 ( under rated ) hp and you all cry. But with slight tunes I believe this car will become a legend. I can't help but think that this car years from now will be one of the most feared cars on the streets. Tuned with single or larger twin turbos. Better cooling. Aftermarket Diff and the obvious bolt on bits. I'm sure this 1M will destroy things in it's path.

Basic point is. 335hp is plenty for a stock daily. Can't wait to see the monster this thing turns into when some great tuners get into it. Besides. Some of you would tune your lawn mower if you could. So what's the matter if BMW remain conservative with the 1M numbers? That will just set u THAT much more apart from the rest. And I like that.

Unless the 1M is running a significantly different ecu than the 335is or the Z4 sDrive35i, both the JB4 and the PROcede units should work with it fine.

Yes but with a starting HP rated higher... Id hope the Tuned HP is much higher as well.

By the way... Im so jealous of your Twin Screw. I wish I woulda held out for a EuroSport. Active is nice and all but I like the way yours performs and looks. And its on an Mcoupe which is totally beast.

I think the interior is amazing and so is the exterior , but im a bit disapointed with the power numbers. I was expecting 360-380 HP range.

I think my BIGGEST disappointment is the color choice limitation...any idea why the limit it to 3?

If they (BMW) are achieving higher numbers through software then they are eating up into the space the piggybacks use to make their power... I dont think you can slap on a piggyback and pick up the gains you would on a 135.

Im not a tuner but it seems to make sense to me they (BMW) are utilizing some of the tuners methods (ie more boost) to get these gains.

Anyone have a definitive answer on this?

LOL.. no doubt...

It's really interesting to see all the " not enough power" comments, especially from current 135 owners..... who apparently must all be forgetting that of the 12 pre-drive winners, four of them already owned a 135... and none of them I know of came away saying that the 1M was down on power, or didn't offer a sizable peformance increase over their current cars.....

For those that love their 135s... then by all means keep your current car.
For those with HIGHLY modified 135s.... you've already gone "ALL IN", and no one expects that you'll want to lose money on all that you've done already...

For those that have been waiting for an M car that is more true to what M originally was 25 years ago.... the 1M is a welcome breath of fresh air.

This car is " market- engineered " to a price and performance LIMIT . The the 1 M/ M3 parallels the Cayman/911 conundrum. The fans of the entry level car want more performance, but the " older brother's " longer developed branding goodwill/halo status will forever mandate artificial restraints , internet griping not withstanding.
Put yourself in the same shoes as you present your business case to the Board for a 375 hp 1M and explain how that wouldn't cannabilize sales from the more profitable /unit sold M3 !
