I'm very interested in getting a new BMW but my experience at the dealership was very odd. So let me explain the scenario and I would appreciate any feedback from the community.

So here is the scenario. I live in Toronto Canada and I'm interested in getting the 325i with some options. One of the options I would really, really like to get are the 330i sports rims and tires on the 325i (style 162 wheels with run-flats.). Well, apparently in Canada customizing your BMW with options that aren't on the spec sheet of that class of car are hard or nearly impossible to do. In Europe and America apparently you can do a lot better job in customizing your BMW especially with a simple request like mine (162 wheels + tire on 325i).

So I went to talk to the sales guy and told him what I wanted. And he said the following to me.

The cost of getting (162 wheels + tires on a 325i) in Canada will cost you an additional $8000 CDN. The reason being is the following:
- BMW Canada will need to place a custom order for the vehicle.
- BMW Canada will need to order your tires + rims.
- BMW Canada will need to adjust your 325i default settings to accommodate the bigger wheels. This adjustment will include:
• installing bigger brakes
• changing/adjusting the suspension
• balancing the wheels + tires to accommodate the 162 18" tires because the 325i that Canada exclusively get are not set-up to handle that large of a wheel.

So am I being lied to (I think so). But are any of these facts true? Do they really need to adjust all these settings to accommodate for bigger tires/rims.

Just for the hell of it I asked the guy, well what if I bought a 323i and I wanted to have the 18" rims and tires, what would that costs? His answer is you can't throw 162/tires/rims on a 323i. The cost to do that would be too much because 323i are set-up for 16" wheel base and they would need to order extra parts?

So I would love to know anyones opinion on this situation? Has anyone installed 162 rims + tires on a 325i? Was it as easy as just throwing them on and getting a wheel balance done or are there more steps required (ie getting bigger brake pads etc)

We can't order Styling 162 wheels on a 325i either but dealers will sell them.

AFAIK, all of the adjustments are bogus.

I think the discussion of suspension adjustment is probably bogus if you're talking about the E90 325i. At least on the BMWUSA.com website, for $3550 you can add style 195 wheels/tires, which are 8x18" in the front, and 8x18.5" in the rear. That's the same size as the 162s, and mentions nothing about suspension adjustment.

I am assuming that at that price, you're keeping your OEM wheels/tires as well. If that isn't the case, you're looking at close to $1500/wheel since the OEM stuff is probably $450/ea including tire.

It's true that the 325 comes with smaller discs normally, but usually that isn't a problem. The problem is big discs on wheels without enough clearance. Maybe I'm wrong, but that would be my thought.

Don't buy the wheels through your dealership. Somebody is obviously trying to scam you. If you want the 162s, simply buy them slightly used through somebody on this website and bolt them right up when they arrive. Much cheaper and free from frustration.

:mad: Dealer is bullshitting you big time. I have a 330i with sport package and they had no problem offering me som 17s for winter tires...no alignement adjustments.

I wanted to change my Bridgestones for Michelin PS2s, before I took delivery, and the dealer guy said they would only credit me $80 per tire cause they were OEM. I said OK, I'll give you 160 per tire, can i get a spare set? he kinda paused and looked elswhere.

Dealers are so full of shit, they swore to me that the top speed was 210 km/h while I've taken it to over 240 I aksed if I could disable the autoleveling headlights, they said no...again bullshit.

Sometimes I wonder if they really ever read the specs or if they were simply shoe salesmen the week before and decided to sell Bimmers this week.

The service department...different story. :rocks: professional and efficient. Now when I have a question, I talk to as service guy.

i could have had any wheel & tyre option factory fitted, just like you can. the extra upgrade cost over the standard wheels is nothing like you were quoted.

in fact, if you take a look at the tyres/wheels threads, there are many proud owners showing off photos of their upgraded e90s - many of them have 325.

- adjust the cars suspensions to ensure I get proper clearance for the wheels
- adjust the sport suspension for the wheels
- get a tire and wheel balance

So just want to confirm with everyone that it is as simple as "Plug n Play". I can personally install them myself in my driveway without needing to adjust anything else.

Ja, you can be sure.

Just FYI, the opposite isn't true - I couldn't move from my 18" wheels to 16" because the brakes on a 330xi are too big for 16. That is the only such limitation on these cars.

All you need to do is get the wheels , have a tire place fit tires, and then put them on the car.

Your salesperson seems to have a IQ of 1 or is trying to make money out of you.

does the stock spec of 325i in canada come with 17inch rims too? most people in singapore, just buy and retrofit the rims after delivery, even with original rims and tyres.

That salesguy doesnt have a clue what he's talking about.

My suggestion. Take the stock wheels that come with the car and swap out the tires for snows in the winter. Then go and get the 162 wheels from the dealer, someone here on E90post or online such as BMWWheels.com and put whatever tires you want on. There will be no fitment problems. In the end you will pay more for the convenience of the dealer doing it for you.

To go slightly off topic.. I picked my 330 up at the end of January from Parkview BMW and basically did everything on my own afterwards...winter rim/tire set up, clear bra, alarm. I figure I've already saved $2200 on those 3 things alone by not letting the dealer rip me off.

Use the stock rims for snows in the winter.

& buy the rims you want aftermarket
