European 135i drivers : HPFP problems ???

How many of you have got the fuel pump troubles?
I think mine is showing the first signs : longer cranks now and then, especially after a long standstill.

No problems with mine!
I'm using ESSO 98 which is about 93 US. Never anything less.

Car runs rough when cold but as soon as she warms up, it's just fantastic. Everything is smooth.

I'm using Ultimate 98 no problems here so far..
I think de jungle juice they have in the United States is not the quality fuel we have in Europe.

I'm using Esso SuperPlus (98) - as well. All of "us" in the military system use it - IF we want to use tax free gas! lol Esso states on its pumps that its gasolines are "Sulpher Free". I think this is the main difference between gas over here, than "over there"!

The service manager at my local BMW Zentrum told me the HPFP is not an "issue" over here in Deutschland - when I asked him about this problem. he said it has to do with the better fuels over here.

I remember about 22 years ago.... a small tuning company in DC called APE (Autothority Performance Engineering, in Va.) ran some dyno tests on USA vs German gas. They knew of a freindly Lufthansa pilot who flew over a 55 gallon drum of SuperPlus. At that time Porsche was de-tuning their cars bc they said in the states you have bad gas. But APE's tests showed that 98 Super Plus was equal to 93-94 octane Sunocco fuel. After that Porsche slowly started to tune their US cars to ROW specs. Today its almost no differnce except for SAE Hp vs DIN PS ratings.

I think its fair to say that in the US there is not one standard type of fuel package. It varies from state to state, EPA xone to zone. Until this changes - the us will be stuck with this wiches brew of differnt gasolines from city to city.

Btw... speaking of types of gasoline. Does anyone use Shell's V-power 100 octane? Or Aral's Ultimate(Sp?) 99 octane?

Once I filled up with 20 euros worth of Shell's V-power, and the engine did "seem" to run smoother. ? Don't know if I was feeling this in my wallet or butt sensor! lol Just wondering what others think.

No problems at all.. 2-year old car (built Apr '08) with currently 27.000 Kilometers on it

.. but i have to say, that i am sometimes thinking about the HPFP problem when starting the car. A short ejaculatory prayer helped till now...

I personally have had no problems. But there are cases of HPFP failure in europe specifically in Germany. My friend has an AC Schnitzer 135i and lost a fuel pump around 5k and now around 12k his second one is showing signs ie long cranks. He is military so of course he's only used ESSO 98 or shell racing 100 (for race day). I still haven't seen a definate cause of why this happens aren't we getting a little too focused on Fuel. If every city or state has a different combo wouldn't some cities or states have far more failures? It seems more random than that unfortunatly the only people that know for sure are BMW and they're denying there is a problem at all (and revising the fuel pump at the same time)

Well, I might have to disagree. I have a 08 135 and have had long starts took to dealer said either SW or HPFP they loaded new software. The problem was corrected for a little while. Long starts have returned have appointment for next week. So in short don't think it's the gas!

When I was at the NY International Auto Show, I was speaking to the main sales manager of Alpina Motors, and we brought up the whole HPFP issue and he stated that the states have the worst gasoline ever, especially the central states. The coasts are decent though. He said that the refineries are out-dated and the gasoline sits for a long time after processing in silos, thus hindering quality. In europe he said he has not heard of the HPFP issue at all, hence the type of gas can certainly play a role in the dilemma in the states...just some useless info

While I was in the showroom ordering my car, I asked my dealer rep at Pentagon about the HPFP issue, and he cringed, lol. He also said that the problem was solved with the N55 engine.

So, assuming that the N55 engine has solved the issue, start comparing the two engines. What is different in the N55 that doesn't cause the HPFP to fail like they do in the N54? Maybe then we can single out the problem.

I know we can't take their word that the problem has been solved because its too early to tell with the new N55's. But still, might be someplace to start.

update... I now have long cranks myself. Mr. Alpina probably doesn't spend much time driving N54 powered cars. And It's definatly too soon to believe the N55 has fixed the problem since they don't admit the N54 has problem openly. I'll wait till the first model N55's are pusing 2 years or 15,000miles before I'd consider them safe

Mine is starting to do the long cranks, but it only does them when the car is cold. Never does them when the car warms up. I will probably wait until I am in Vilseck or see if I can get the car in before I have to be up there and see what's the problem.

Shoot, I had to take my car back in. Long cranks again of course they loaded new software again. So far so good but just like last time it will probably work for about two weeks and come back. I'm starting to get fed up! Come on BMW quit with BS and fix customers cars you know there is issues with the HPFP!

........and it finally bit me. Started the car this afternoon and took 6 seconds to crank. Just when it starts up......"Service Engine Soon" light comes on. But engine still runs strong and without any hiccups. Going to the "stealer" tomorrow and then to my SME afterwards and see what he tells me.

Spoke with teh SME and he spoke with the head mechanic at Euler K-town and he told him that they are aware of the problems and I need to get the car in soon. Went to Euler Landshtul and was told I have a fault code and its the one for the fuel system. Now to see if I can get the car in some kind of way before I go to Vilseck or get the car done there.

Just joined the club on long cranks.

Made an appointment to get it checked on Monday. They told me they need it for TWO days just to check it out and confirm- I'm hoping that includes the fix time if it's required.

SES light isn't that bad. I had mine come on and remembered that when the time is coming close it will light up.

Rob, it takes probably more than 2 days as they have to do about 6 pages of diagnostics and by what the maintenance guy at Euler Landshtul told me they go step by step and test, then replace until the gremlin is gone.

GB, I see you have the performance SSK, how much of a difference is it from factory?
