Here's another video of a 1 series with the hood lifting at high speed. Design flaw. One of the reasons the hoods on the newer cars are designed differently. Go to 2:50 to see.

PS - I love my 1er, in spite of its flaws...

I'll have to see if my hood lifts next time I exercise the car. I don't recall it doing so, but I'm not typically paying attention to the hood and fender gap under those circumstances as it is. I can definitely see how it forms a wing, especially with the leading edge.

Do you mean newer BMW models with the hood set further back from the front clip as opposed to sitting on top of it like ours?

I've never noticed it either but I don't think we're necessarily in the right position to notice. Plus, if I'm going that fast my eyes are usually elsewhere, like on the road, haha. I'll try to notice as well, next time I'm going triple digits.

it exploded

Made a simple set of braces to keep the IC from pushing into the belt again.
Hope it works.

And I'm going to have to really look into the hood lift thing.
That's one thing I for sure don't need at speed. I have enough other shit to watch.

I'm not opposed to drilling holes and some shitty hood pins. Safety trumps all.

Interestingly, they’ve gone back to it on the brand new 3 series. Does anyone know of the E92 had similar hood lift problems?

Rather than dealing with something like hood pins, I wonder if just using some kind of tape over the headlight would redirect the air over the hood when at the track?

This is what will fill the chip/divot. Then the bottle you posted is what you use to take off the excess putty. You just use the supplied cloth they send you, wet it, and rub it over the surface of the putty you put down until it sits flush with the surface.

Cool thing is that if you get it wrong, using the leveler will take all the putty off and you can start again. But it comes with good instructions.

I used that method to clean up a ton of road rash.
Here are the pictures I took.

Yes, that is interesting. Didn't notice that on the new 3 series till you pointed it out. I wonder why? Maybe they've found a solution. I'd like to say I guess they know what they're doing, but as we already know, they don't always get it right. Hence the hood lifting at high speed on the 1 series. Plus many other things.

I see what your talking about. Yeah...that chip will need to come out to get the other stuff in.

I wish I had some pics of repairs I have done with the putty. My daughter gouged out a huge spot on her side view mirror from a mailbox lid left down on a narrow street.

Right in the center of the mirror about the size of a quarter with a trailing scratch from it. I filled it all in with the putty, let it cure, and it looked like I had put down a feather coat and sanded it.

I then just scuffed it up with some scotch-brite, then painted her entire mirror.

With yours, I would do the touch up paint as it will be tough to blend it any other way aside from painting a larger area from fender line to headlight edge.

You know, I remember when the last 2 and 3 series came out, people were complaining that the hood looked cheap, because it didn't extend to the grill, so they thought the design was for cost cutting measures.

While you could be right that it was to cut down on hood lift, I think it may actually have been a cost cutting measure after all, because it looks like they battled hood lift with two release mechanisms on each side, rather than a central mechanism like on our cars. I'm assuming the new 3 also has these double mechanisms.

My wife's 2015 370Z has two hood latches as well and I'm sure it helps with hood lift.

Good point.

With the new hood latches, you have to pull the release in the car twice to open the hood, FYI. There's no opener under the hood like in our cars.

A couple of weeks back, my comfort access stopped working. My mechanic found that the area under the trunk liner where the comfort access module is located had standing water, and, after lots of water tests, he determined that there was a tiny pinhole in a weld behind the passenger side tail light, and water was slowly dripping down there, which fried the module.

Well, after sealing the hole, I was quoted $400 or so for a new comfort access module and program, but I found out on this site that, if you take a module from another E82/E90/E92, it's already programmed and will work. I found one from an E90 on eBay for $60, installed it today in 2 minutes...and it works!

Not sure if I've posted this. Got OEM roof racks before Christmas and made it be the winter beater.

Kinda sorta low key digging the look with the box.

I had one more thought about hood lift. I wonder if anyone experiencing the hood lift has tried screwing in the little rubber adjustment feet under the hood all the way clockwise? Those feet allow for hood height adjustment, and it's possible that going just a little too far in the wrong direction could push the air under the hood, rather than over.

Good idea, and since you thought of it maybe you could be the guinea pig and try that on your car and let us know if you get any hood lift?

I'm going to try going 130mph in reverse to see if I get any trunk lift!

Here's a 4-page thread about hood lift. It's from the 1M forum, but it doesn't matter because it's the same hood. It has both videos I posted here earlier about hood lift. Dack has a couple of posts in there, as well as a post with links to other car forums with the same problem.

Drove mine up to the Reyn Speed Shop open house this morning in San Juan Capistrano. Great meetup, and didn't see a single other 1 Series.
