You guys are lucky to have access to invoice.
I used to work as a salesman (not cars) and its mostly about wearing down the customer by spinning talk and sounding believable by saying anything. Had a sales rep today with a bunch of papers apparently listing their margin but he wouldnt show me them, I offered him an amount above cost if he could show me the papers and he said no. He blew the sale pretty fast. He wanted me to start negotiating from his (unproven) cost price number and wouldn't budge on $5000 dealer delivery saying its included as the profit (accounting 101?). He also claimed the invoice you guys get is just their advertised invoiced and not real. The amount he was getting me to start from was 4500AU off retail retail is 106,000AU (88,0000 exc tax) Thats how much we pay for an almost fully optioned 135i in Aus Last edited by ItsHectic; 08-08-2011 at 02:42 AM.. |

Hi there.
Check out http://cars.overstock.com/ and configure your car and it'll give you MSRP and whatever 'invoice' is. This is how and what I paid for the 135i I picked up last week. Peace |

could someone clarify what exactly the invoice price means? and what's the dealer's break even point just for reference? I have no idea what the margin on these cars is...

Invoice is, in theory, the dealer's wholesale price. In practice, there are many "incentives" and "holdbacks" that mean dealer's actually don't end up paying invoice price. What those discounts are can vary, so unless you have direct access to see them (some sources track them) you don't really know what they are.

As far as I know dealer invoice is around 92% of the MSRP. $500 over invoice is about 93% of MSRP.

BMW dealers have a wide range of pricing policies. It seems that everyone on this forum has a bargain. Prices on 1 Series cars depends upon supply and demand. 135s and 128s are slow sellers. Dealer inventories of them are tiny compared to 3 Series. With an 8% markup the dealer is not making much over what they pay. Look for a dealer profit of 2-5%.

Also, Edmunds True Market Value will usually show incentives/holdbacks and invoice. That's usually where I start negotiating from: http://www.edmunds.com

To the best of my knowledge BMW does not have holdbacks. Traditionally, domestic cars have a holdback, a kind of bonus that the dealership gets back from GM or others. Incentives from BMW on the 1 Series are low interest loans and good lease rates. With that said, Edmunds has good price points for seeing what you can get locally.

You guys are lucky. Back in June 2008 when the e-con was flying high the best I could get after going to 3 dealers was $350 off MSRP (rip off I know).
Back when I was looking there were less than 30 135i's in Florida....they basically didn't negotiate at all.

Based on these numbers, I guess i shouldn't be too unhappy with an offer 600 over invoice, even though overstock.com, which appears to use the same engine as consumer reports, says the best local price is 500 over invoice.
Still it completely ignores that current incentive: ›*Loyalty Incentive Available to current and former BMW Car owners or lessees of a Model Year 2005 or newer vehicle who purchase or lease a new MY11 or MY12 BMW July 1, 2011 – January 2012 and do not utilize the Loyalty Rate Reduction Program through BMW FS. Incentives ubject to change. See dealer for details. (Expires 12/31/2011) $1,000** |

Anyone know the detailed rules behind the Loyalty Incentive? I don't directly qualify, but a good friend does, and she doesn't mind "giving me her coupon" as it were. |
