cracked windshield

Today a freaking tiny pebble cracked my front windshield. Anybody know how much it is to get it replaced through BMW vs. aftermarket (if possible)? Thanks.

Just found out that BMW wants like $1000 to replace it. Full glass coverage, but not OEM glass.

WAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine got cracked two months ago, called the insurance, they ordered the glass from BMW and set someone to my house for the install, took about 45 min and didnt have to pay a dime, just a bottle of water for the guy doing the install since it was hot as balls out and he couldnt get the lighting he needed in the garage so he had to do it outside

Actually, I just got a call back from my insurance guy (State Farm) and he was able to get me an OEM piece of glass. And it is going to be installed at my work. All covered under insurance.

I'm already on the third piece. The two replaced by BMW OEM glass and covered by the insurance.

(in the states) all glass is covered by your comprehensive insurance. Zero depustable most of the time. AND.... the claim can not count against your record.

I had my winshield replaced by my local German BMW dealer for almost 900 euros. Over here in DE I had a 300 euro deductable. Knock on glass no stone chips yet.

Mine cracked last week and has grown from 1" to about a foot in the 4 days since. They're coming on Sat to replace.

EDIT: Just called the company that's doing the replacement and they're using Pilkington Glass which is the same manufacturer that makes the BMW OEM window. It's called "aftermarket" but it is the same exact part without the BMW logo. Also learned that the rain sensor is actually a part of the window so that will be replaced with the glass. I'd love to see what that invoice looks like...

That is what my insurance company was going to have mine replaced with. But my agent (State Farm) got them to get me OEM glass. He really fights to get me what I want. Very impressed.

That BMW logo (which I have yet to locate) really meant that much to you? It's the EXACT same windshield. This is not coming from the agent who would be trying to save money, but rather the glass company who wouldn't give a shit either way if they put on a Pilkington or Pilkington with BMW logo on the car. There is NO DIFFERENCE.

i know what you mean but there can be differences. In my last car, after an accident, they replaced my drivers door window w/ an aftermarket, they told me they were identical and were made by the same company. Within 1 min on the highway I could feel the wind come in and rain too. After much fighting w/ the insurance company, I went to the body shop to argue my case and meet w/ the insurance adjuster, luckily for me there was another G35 there and after comparing windows, you could easily tell they had a diff curve to them. Ever since then, I will not take anything but OEM

I hope in your case its a diff story

PS, the BMW logo should be towards the bottom on the drivers side i think. I only saw it when the guy pointed it out to me before installing

Just snapped this picture:

I don't know why Pilkington would make a good version for BMW and a shitty version of the exact same window for replacements.

i totally get your point but you asked why the BMW logo meant so much, so I just told you my story of why I insisted in officially OEM glass

could be the Nissan glass maker cuts corners on their non OEM replacements to save money, who knows, maybe its diff w/ BMW. I just wasnt about to take the chance

I know they told you it was the same mfg but could you verify that?

What I'm trying to say is that the insurance company has a financial interest in putting the least expensive windshield on the car that will still do the job. The people at the glass company have zero motivation to lie to me about the quality of a windshield. Every body shop I've ever been to has told me flat out "your insurance company will only pay for aftermarket products" if that was the case. Also, I can't imagine that they sell enough 1 series windshields to make it a profitable venture to replicate them with shitty aftermarket parts. Again, I don't understand why Pilkington would make nice windshields and rain sensors for the cars at the factory and shitty quality replacements.

Well it seems to me and others that there is a difference. And given the choice I would rather have an OEM part. I simply asked my insurance guy if it was possible to get one and he had no issue with that. He is a car guy and he knows that I am particular, so he did what he could for me. That's all. I did not make a production out of it.
