I'm not surprised you guys are experiencing good results with the BMS thermostat. I think the key to lower temps is deleting/replacing the stock thermostat.

If I'm not mistaken the key difference between the advan stage 1 and 2 is the larger setrab core and the addition of an lower temp thermostat. I'm not sure if the larger core is necessary, but the thermostat is what's keeping the oil cool.

I think this BMS thermostat is really good value considering what it offers. I think the ultimate mod would be an option to turn it on and off via canbus, but we can't have it all

All jokes aside, I think all N54's need hood venting for heat dissipation.

Agree. Vented hoods will help the heat escape. Every bit helps.

I see slightly higher temps with the cowl and HVAC in place. Once they are removed and your car is already warm you can see the amount of hot air escaping out the top of the bonnet. I drove the 135i without any HVAC or cowl for over 2 years.

How is an A2W intercooler going to reduce engine bay temps though?

As far as I know A2W is just more efficient at lowering IATs
You might want to read joes post and the context again

Isn't the HVAC filter there to filter the air coming into the AC? Does it make any difference to the smell etc with it off?

I guess it would be possible to run with the cowl off and HVAC on right?

But yeah, I might look at doing this mod along with getting some other stuff from BMS. Anyone want to share shipping once they have the thermostat back in stock?

I've always wondered with good vents for our cars - how do you stop water getting into the engine bay? Or just don't drive when raining? :

I know e9x m3 has special covers/drains for their vents.

I don't think it really matters if water gets into the engine bay unless you have open intakes. Obviously you wouldn't want water getting into the ECU compartment but as long as it's properly closed/sealed it should be fine.

Right? =Þ

Its most likely bullshit, but I read somewhere a while ago that bmw designed the direct injection engines to run on the hotter side to minimise carbon buildup.

Sounds like typical internet forum BS heresay.....

I have been monitoring my car for over a week now, highest oil temp I have seen is 115 Deg C in some traffic light GP style driving. Typically it sits at 105-110 when warmed up and doesn't budge from 110.

I would have thought so also, yet Terry from BMS is no fool it would be nice to get a few comments from him though.

"run flats" are also "optimal" by BMW as well.... what's your point? Just because something is "engineered by BMW", does not mean it is the end all be all. Many things have room for improvement.
