Better off going to a garage that stocks oil and gets volume discounts.. e.g. Advan
Their 5W30 also is LL-01 approved

LL-01 is bmw standard for oil. I use Pennzoil ultra 5w40 but I should probably be using Mobil 1 0w40 super syn or something along those lines. Look for the rating on the back of the jug or bottle

And to answer your question any part store should carry these oils. In the US I go to O'Reillys

The Castrol 0W40 A3/B4 handles the test a lot better. I'm not an expert at all, but I would have though 400 degrees would decompose the oil straight away.

That's what I use.

Also I think the engine oil cover cap says BMW recommends Castrol too.

The Chrono is a true race oil, not really recommended for the street use as it does not contain any detergents. I would be changing it a lot more than 5000 km. I used the Motul 300V 5W30 Power Racing in my racecar, the 5W30 equivalent to the Chrono, and would change it after every weekend.

I will be using Motul 300V 5w40 8100.

300v has detergent unlike the Redlines.

alik01 has discussed this with Motul before we all decided the switch.

Anyway, both of my posts are OT. Sorry.

Yes I agree MOTUL 300V 5/40 IS THE BEST OIL TO USE IN YOUR BMW TURBO CAR BAR NON IMO for all track day cars / highly tuned road cars.

I have used 300V for around 8 years in all my race / road cars and bikes and will not change.

300V IS NOT LL01 so you must change the oil every 5,000km for a road car and after every second track day

Motul 300V is not 8100

NOTE - DO NOT USE 300V WITH E85

What oil for e85 use then? I currently have mobil synthetic 5w30 as the 300v wasnt available locally at the time. Does the ethanol break the 300v down to quickly?

The local autobarn carries royal purple 5w30, was thinking of giving it go...is it worth the $10 extra over the 300v?

Damn. Did not know the 300V race oil has detergents. Damn, and I recently sold off the 48L of 300V I had at home.

Penrite would be the guys to talk to, as they supply group a touring cars I believe (the touring cars have been running flex fuel for years)

I have heard that E85 is brutal on oil as it dilutes the oil and the ester base is no good for E85 (generally speaking these ester base oils are considered to be a premium grade oil in normal applications with superior shear properties)

I recall the jdm guys were using a heavier grade (i.e 10W60 in applications which call for 5W30) to counteract this dilution effect associated with running E85.

Also I'm sure your mobil 1 will be fine, it may just require dumping sooner if running E85.

Motul say to use 6100 when using E85.
E85 finds its way into the oil and will break it down super quick, we had a Nissan GTR with a dry sump system running E85 you could smell the E85 in the oil at the oil tank, it would burn your eyes and this is after only 2hours running.

as long as you run a really high quality oil in general it should be pretty right?

few BITOG/evom/SAU etc. threads have done a ton of UOA's on oil that's been used with E85 for 9-10kkm and haven't found any further breakdown/loss in viscosity etc. of just about any brand/weight high quality synth oil - a lot of TALK about needing special oils from the last few years.

you'll have your oil smelling like whatever fuel you use anyway?
