Funny Read

Check out this one. Interesting how some folks equate the subaru Legacy with the 135i. I find it interesting how a person who drives a Subaru can call the BMW ugly. To each his own I guess.

Not many. I think the Legacy is a perfectly respectable car. The Spec B looks quite entertaining, they're super safe, and they have a certain Q ship factor that the 1-Series lacks.

That said, I can't see anyone cross-shopping the two cars. They are targeting different audiences.

Maybe not cross-shopping, but I think many people will look at a certain price range and change their minds a lot about exactly what they're looking for. So far I've gone from STi to the Spec B to used M3 to 335i to G coupe to 335i to S4 to 335i to 135i

Funny you say that.
I'm true blue BMW but we certainly looked at the Subaru Legacy as an alternative-
and I've heard other bimmer guys (especially in the winter) bring up the Suby.
The consumer metrics on this fall back position must be strange.

I think a lot of consumers will figure on a price range first, and look at the possibilities there. I'm looking pretty much anywhere between 30k and 50k. Originally, I really needed 4 doors and a decent backseat, but wanted power and fun, which is why I had a WRX and then an STi. I really like the sports sedan thing, so this time was shopping for "classier" cars in that group, like the Legacy, G Coupe, 335i, etc. At that point it's a matter of how much you want to spend for more power and frills as you move up that food chain. Looks are very low on my priorities.

Now I realized I don't really need as much room inside because we have another car for family stuff, so it opened up my options a bit.

legacy is a (arguably the last) good looking subaru. price and performance are in the same ball park, as long as you just say no to frilly BMW options.

Legacy is a decent car but does not come close to premium German brands. There is no comparison to German cars IMO.

Not at all interested when I shop for a german car. Might as well get a Toyota if that were the case.

drove a Legacy GT right after driving an auto 335i. I am a subaru fan, but there is really no comparison at all. Granted, there is a hell of a price difference. But the legacy wasn't even in the same ball park.....

Well, when you don't even look, that's why you'll never understand why there's a comparison.

How about Legacy GT v. a lower end 3 series? What about when you include standard AWD and you live in Michigan?

If there truly were no comparison, there wouldn't be loads of articles making the comparison.

Hi all, been lurking for months, thought this compelled me enough to register and post. :roundel:

Funnily enough I was very close to buying the Liberty GT Spec B tuned by STI. But when I did the math and worked out how much I'd be playing each month I felt I wasn't really getting enough of a wow factor for my money. Cross shopped next to Audi to size up a 2.0 TT - with a 6-8 month wait list for my spec I figured I'd wait for more details on the 135i. So very glad I did, the more I read and see the more I want. I could never go back to Subaru now but that being said there are a huge number of people that put the Liberty and the 3 Series in the same category.

Serious question: What's a "Q ship factor"?

Ah - nautical term - a merchant ship, armed to the teeth, and yet made up to look quite innocent. The British did them in WW I (a good book to read on the British Q-ships is, "My Mystery Ships", by Campbell - the British Admiralty used the 'Q', i.e., Q-5, designation for all decoy merchant ships in 1916) and the Germans were known to use them to good advantage in WW II.

My favorite Q-ship is a 2003 Audi S6 - ha a real sleeper!!

Ah. OK. So basically it's a sleeper then.

I know more than your average person about WWI and WWII (or so I thought), and I had never heard of that.

Thanks, Hugo.

Oh yeah, The original meaning of a "Q-ship" was lotsa fun. See, you take your average everyday merchant freight ship and bolt a 5 inch gun to the deck, and then throw a tarp over it. Later, when you're on the high seas and that U-boat surfaces next to you and wants to board your ship, you say "be right with you", then you yank that tarp off the gun and put a shell through the hull of your friendly pirate and send them down to davy jones' locker.

:headbang::headbang::headbang:
Apply directly to the hull
