Are there any 2-din headunits that actually integrate with the steering wheel controls in the E8x series, without having to rewire and get all sorts of adapters ?

This is a nice clean install man ! Can you list exactly what things you used in the install, Dash Kits, extra modules, etc... in order to keep all the functionality. I'm looking to do this for my girlfriends 128i convertible. Thanks.

The funny part about this double-din retrofit kit is that it shows that car with the seat warmers in the instruction manual but somehow they disappear when the product is completely installed. I guess they leave it up to you to figure out where to put them afterward.

Sorry to bump and old thread, but had a question for the guys in this thread who have done the double din install.....

did you have to modify the space behind the double din to make it fit or was there enough space back there as it is?

Couple of questions?

Is Metra the only company that makes a DD kit?

Is there a thread already on what to do with factory head unit... heard something about moving it to the trunk.

Just dropped off my 135 to an audio shop with the understanding they were going to put a Double-Din kit in along with a new sound system. They were told that the 3-series double-din kit fits in the 1. However, they just called and claimed that the 3-series double-din kit doesn't fit They want a ton of $$ to make a custom kit. :thumb down

Can anyone weigh in on whether the plug and play unit is any good? http://www.cars-electronics.com/bmw-...dio_p1398.html

Doesn't seem as nice as the Pioneer unit I really want. Had a Pioneer unit in my last car and loved it.

I didn't review the installation for the 3 series throughly but I am not sure if it applies. Just looking at the layout of the finished unit, I am pretty sure the extra space comes from the bottom of the current dash where the buttons are - under the radio and HVAC. On the OP these buttons appear to have moved from the bottom to the top of the stack. The HVAC controls appear to be lower and the enlarged radio opening above them. Rearranging all of this seems like it would take some thought and you wouldn't want somebody that didn't use good standards for their work to mess with it.

I found a site that says they have them in stock but I have no idea if they're legit. I'm not willing to buy it without seeing a review .

Sorry to bump this thread. But I miss some answers. Do you need the OEM radio equipment for updating the software if you change for an aftermarket radio? Does still works the gongs and the pdc with an aftermarket solution?

from what I know, you do still need that. You can move that in your glove compartment.

info is in this thread. Granted the person is going with a dynavin unit but you still need to keep the oem radio
