Does anyone know if the wiring will be the same on a 2011 with the Harmon Kardon stereo? TPLSM3 what is your turn time on building the enclosure? I'm taking delivery at the end of september and I'm definitely interested in putting in an order.

I have a couple quick questions about this setup. I currently have a Kenwood KAC-7202 amp. It's rated for 460 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms and has speaker level inputs. Will this amp power the JL 10w6 well and do I need a LOC since it has the speaker level inputs? Do you guys think the sound quality will be better using a LOC and will it just make life easier having the remote turn on capabilities of the LOC? I also noticed this amp is a little bigger than the JL 500/1 and was wondering if it will fit next to the battery. The dimensions are 15"W x 2-7/16"H x 11-5/16"D for the Kenwood vs 13.40 in. x 9.25 in. x 2.36 in. for the JL. Thanks for your input.

Jeff

P.S. - I just got off the phone with BMW and my car is in production and scheduled for completion on the 20th! Just a few more weeks!

Hey all, I'm new here and interested in learning more about the possibilities of a stereo upgrade to an '08 135i convertible I am considering purchasing. I can't PM yet so I'll just post here.

1st, I'd love some info (i.e. price, ability to build for different speakers, etc.) on the custom enclosures being made by "Ben."

2nd, I have an older Kicker Solobaric 12 inch square sub I'd love to make use of as well as a 5 channel Kicker amp (37.5 x4 + 200 x 1), a kicker component 5 1/4 + tweeter setup, and a 4 inch 2 way Kicker speaker. Would these integrate with my potential 08's DVD Navi equipped radio setup?

lots and lots of information...do a search.

5 1/4 will not fit properly in the doors, despite what anybody will say..IT DOES NOT! anyway...get your info together (MY 20??, what stereo package coming with your car, and goals of system)..then send VP Electricity a PM or go to his website www.musicarNW.com and send him an email. His is a professional audiophile and an expert on all BMW's, esp the 1 and 3 series. He knows what will work with what and will get to the point.

good luck

God I posted in this thread in '09 and still haven't done anything to the audio in my car.. What is a good deal on a 10w6 or 10w7 with a 500/1 amp on craigslist? I'm in SoCal, hopefully I'll be able to get a steal

edit: i always get confused.. if I have a 2008 135i with the regular base sound system (not the premium), which system do I have? Theres so many choices now lol. Also, where would my amp be located? Trunk under the panel? In the cabin behind the seat ?

You have the mid level system like I do. 8 inch woofers under the seats with 40W power if I remember right, 4, 4 inch and 4 tweeters with 25 W. I think it's a pretty good system. But if you like boomy bass as is popular these days, you may want more power. Some go with a earthquake 8 inch in the stock location. Others go for the sub in the trunk.

I say boomy bass because the stock system already over-emphasizes the bass a little. And it gets good output down to at least 30 Hz. I checked it with a CD with tones at a bunch of frequencies and a sound pressure meter. But it doesn't sound like it has a lot of bass because other systems we listen to have even more bass boost in them.

The HK OEM amp outputs a max of 70W to the OEM woofers; that Kenwood amp is rated at a maximum of 40W of speaker level inputs.

I tried a similar Kenwood amp and it sounded like ass when using speaker level inputs!

TPLSM3,

Gorgeous work. Have you done one for a convertible? Do you know if the enclosure dimensions would be the same? Thanks

Got my Sub enclosure from Ben today. Sent all the way Downunder!

Absolutely fantastic!

Local Audio place wanted $900 PLUS my car for 3 DAYS to do it but Ben made it and sent it 1/2 way across the world for less than half of that.

It's sitting on my desk at work right now but I really want to go home and install it!

Wow. Very interested in what setup he has in the pictures shown. A JL 500W Amp and what kind of Sub?

He's planning on running the JL 10" W6 with the enclosure I made for him. The pics from the first page of this thread is a 10" JL W7.

Contact me for details. I can make one for the E90 & E92s as well if interested.
