Fitted Nav to the BMW nav storage tray.....
I bought the storage tray a while back and was deciding what way to go with my 1er, decided against retrofitting the old iDrive, the new one I can get for good money but getting the activation code for the nav from BMW is still a ball ache and I didn't really want to hack the car around too much going double din etc. plus after having a few cars with iDrive I would miss having the Nav up high unlike a double din unit.
So then started to look at different units, loved the idea of the BMW one with voice operation and bluetooth, however being Garmin I just wouldn't want it, terrible, terrible routing. Then looked at the new Navigon as that is my favourite brand for routing, the new 8410 and 8450 look really nice, however not sure I like the design, but could of lived with that, but then started thinking about using it as bluetooth and whether I would get annoyed with it not muting the radio etc. So in the end went with a Pioneer AVIC unit, the F500BT, it looks superb, uses iGo for mapping which I have been using on a hacked Navigon and really like, and it has Parrot Bluetooth built in, it also mutes the radio when calls come in. Anyway, put it in tonight, will take some decent pics of it, only had my phone on me, but here is one to get going...... Last edited by gIzzE; 10-30-2009 at 08:57 AM.. |

The AVIC-F500BT is essentially designed for cars that have factory stereos you don't want to rip out.
You can buy it as it is and hook it up as a seperate nav unit, think of it as a big Garmin that looks more like a Kuro Plasma in design than some cheap walmart own brand LCD, and you can if you want simply plug it into your lighter and use it, if you want sound through the car run an aux cable to the aux in. However you can also hardwire it in, this gives you ignotion switched, mute for the phone and for nav instructions and it means it will turn on/off with your ignition too. One problem I have found is there is no way to turn off the muting for nav instructions, I would prefer them to play over the unit only and not mute my music, and just mute it when the phone rings. I am looking through the sys files to see if I can hack this, if not I will disable the mute wire and just turn the volume down myself. Al in all it seems an alright bit of kit, the phone system works well, the traffic from TMC is excellent and the navigation is spot on. My only concern is the sound from music, playing files from an SD card into the aux on the car sounds terrible compared with my ipod, it only outputs .5v though, so I may try a line driver to up this and see if it improves at all, if not I will forget about using it as a multimedia hub, which is a shame as graphically it is spot on and I don't have the USB port. |

The cable that attaches to the cradle is then hooked to the ciggy lighter for switched ignition and the aux runs to the aux input. I have set it to auto answer the phone after 3 seconds which gives me time to switch to the aux using the steering wheel button if I am not already on that input. |

Part number is....
Installation kit, Navigation Portable 65900445994 However you need to get your dealer to check that you get the tray and do not allow them to match it to your vin, as that part can come with either the bracket or the tray. So get them to double check. I am in Brugge next week, don't know what part of Belgium you are?? |

i have a question dude!
If i ONLY want the navigation feature, is it possible to do this? I already have the OEM BT, so im only lacking the nav. Is there a way to set this up so that I only have my NAV, with directions that cut off the audio? Also, how hard was it to do the wiring? |

Yeah, you just don't bother activating the bluetooth on the Pioneer.
Wiring was really easy. You can get an AVIC-500BT for $180 in the States now, at that price it doesn't matter if you never use the bluetooth feature!! |

This isn't a head unit, it is a portable navigation unit, just the design is based on the Pioneer double din range of nav units.
You can fit any head unit in the car, but it comes with issues when it comes to coding your car, and if you have an oem amp it is a real ball ache. This is a good way to put nav in that doesn't look like the $99 Garmin or TomTom piece of crap. |

Note: I am trying to differentiate the "tray" from the "cradle", where the tray is the indented plastic thing in the dash and the cradle is the part that fits into it and holds the nav unit. Not sure this is correct though. Thanks, Bruce |

Yes, the typical European delivery seems to include either the storage tray or the iDrive. If you do not order iDrive, you get the storage tray. You can retrofit the storage tray and that kit includes the template for cutting the dash. If you search the DIY you should find a posting from a guy who did it.
It seems like what you really need from the storage tray retrofit kit is the template for cutting the dash. It seems like a waste buy the kit for the storage unit just to get the template but I would be hessitant to cut the dash without it. The DIY has pictures of the template you might be able to use to create one. Jim

After having gone thru this with 2 dealers in the Los Angeles area I have found the following.
1) The car does require the retrofit storage tray kit as was mentioned above. 2) I can't get the retrofit kit for the storage tray here in the US. 3) If I get the parts on my own and they are BMW OEM parts, my local dealer will install them. Does anybody know how I can get the retrofit kit and the nav tray for my 2009 135 convertible? |

This gives you the storage compartment retrofit part numbers:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...62&hg=51&fg=95 I would ask the dealer why he can't order this part and if he says he can't, try one of the on-line dealers who advertise here. I think the tray used for the GPS retrofit number is posted above. Jim

SatNav tray
Great to see you fitted the satnav tray, looking to do the same assuming I can get on from to local dealer here. Is all prewired? I.e. if I take out the existing tray with the cover, is there wiring below to connect to the satnav tray?
Thanks in advance! |

This page on RealOEM may be helpful:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...01&hg=65&fg=95 This and the Portable Pro installation instructions indicate you have some wiring to do to hook this up. There is also programming if you want full integration. Mine is on the metal bracket instead of the tray. I just hooked up the power and took a cord to connect the headphone jack to the aux port plus a remote microphone for bluetooth up.
