Define "rough" using objective terms.

The idle jumps up and down by about 300rpm or so until the motor reaches over 120 degrees and it 'feels' like it's gonna stall but never does. it's when it's under about 45 degrees outside.

it's very odd

when i pull out of my garage the throttle feels like it isn't quite as there either.

it's only for a minute or two that it does this but it's very odd to me

Might be a vacuum leak. ? Is your oil cap on, or a leaking valve cover gasket? First step is to read the DME for fault codes.

That would be normal if you a v10 engine however probably, as mentioned, a vacuum leak.

Just had a rough idle on start up, but I was greeted with a low coolant light. Second time in 3 months. Hopefully its just the weather and not a leak.

Your description of the hunting idle and the feeling of almost stalling until the motor is at temp sounds exactly like the symptoms I had when my injectors were failing.

Did they all fail, or just one?

More info than you asked for but... I'm bored.

The hunting idle and stumbling popped up about 3 months ago... I took it in and they said 2 of the injectors were leaking so they replaced the bank of 3. Apparently the Vanos threw a code after the injectors were replaced... I had no SES's beforehand, so I couldn't tell you if they knocked it during the service or the bad injectors were masking the failing solenoid.

If you asked me right then how the car ran after service... I would of told you 100%. I was wrong...

Just this last Sunday, on a cold morning start... the erratic idle came back. I took it in and they said 2 other injectors failed on the other bank, so they replaced that second bank.

After the first fix, the hunting and stumbling were gone and the idle was nice, I would of said there was no issues at all... After this second fix, my idle is butter, it is noticeably smoother than after the first fix and the nicest it's been in probably over a year.

That's my injector story.

It makes me wonder how many non-buttery smooth idling 135's are out there due to bad injectors... not quite bad enough to throw a code though. Sucks.

That sucks, glad you found the problem and thanks for the detail!

Had the same thing happen to me this morning, only have 11,000 km on it. I hope it doesn't become a regular thing lol

There aren't any codes coming up. I bet it's the fuel injectors though from what people have said. I'll just take it into Turner if bmw doesn't warranty it for me (cause they know my car is "modded"). Glad they are both so close to me haha

I brought it in to my dealer within 30 mins of the lights popping up. They topped everything up for free. Their explanation was the weather change but this is the first time it has happened in 2 winters. I keep an eye on it since I don't see any puddles in my underground.
