Engine makes noise after shutdown
Anyone ever hear this sound after shutting down your engine? What could it be as it lasts for 10 minutes or more after shutdown. No mods on car so nothing I've done.

That's very weird. My car makes an electric whirring noise for a few seconds after I turn it off. It sounds like it's coming form the fuel pump. It's nothing like your sound and, like I said, only lasts fow a few seconds. You may want to contact the dealer.

OK...thanks.
Now why does it run for 10+ minutes after shutdown and not every time I turn the car off? |

That is not a normally functioning water pump....the car has some sort of issue. The sounds should only last 10-15 seconds, maximum.

Depending upon the engine temperature I believe the water pump can continue to run for a few minutes after shutdown to cool off the turbo's. My 750 does this quite often. I have heard my 1M do it a couple of times also... but that squeal is not normal. Both my cars have no squeal like that! I would bring to the dealer to get that looked into. |

Never encountered that awkward screechy metal sound featuring on your 1M. Get it sorted out by your dealer.
...or maybe you got some secret 1M language decoder allowing your 1M to communicate with you: "You go back, Jack, do it again; Wheels turnin' 'round and 'round!". Still needs some fine-tuning though, to meet the level of Knight Rider's Kitt. |

My car makes this noise from time to time. You notice it most when you drive the car quite hard and then shut it down. This noise is what everyone calls the "fax machine or laser printer warming up" noise. Rick basically I would be more gentle with the throttle before shutting the car off. Or let the engine idle for several minutes before shutting the engine off. I rarely hear this noise on my car now. But when it was new I heard it all the time. Perhaps my driving style has changed.

I can't believe BMW would release a vehicle knowing a component would make such an awful squeal. Should definitely get them to look at it. It could be a common defect to some.
