BMW "Inactive" light
Ok so the other day I pulled out of the garage and my 2011 128i said "low tire", but I figured it was just a few PSI so I drove it about 8 miles total, came home and checked the tire, it had no air at all. I then noticed there was a screw in the tire, called BMW, "You can't patch a runflat", so I called goodyear and they patched it because the screw was right in the center of the tread. I just brought the tire to the goodyear place, not the whole car. So they patched it, I take it home, put the tire on and now I'm getting the "Inactive" light. I tried resetting it, I'm sure it's the TPMS in that tire...called goodyear and the guy basically said there's no way they did it. Car only has 6,900 miles on it. Could it be the cold weather?
Also, (I might sound dumb), I hooked up the obdII reader and it said "no codes"....do you need to start the car for that? I just put the keypad in without starting it. |

A lot of times, tire places will force you to rebuild a TPMS sensor if they dismount/mount a tire. Did they charge you that fee? If they actually did damage the TPMS sensor like they say they do, which is apparently "out of their control" it might not be picking up.

When I called them today he was like "First of all, did you reset the system?" I'm like yea, I tried numerous times. So I'm like, I'm just wondering if maybe when you took the tire off or put it on it could of been jarred or broken? He said "No that doesn't get touched at all when you take the tire off, we don't touch that at all"
They only charged 27 bucks for a patch/plug. That was total price. Ideally it would be nice to take it to BMW, and have it fixed under warranty. But chances are the take the tire off and say....well someone patched this tire so they probably messed up the sensor and charge X amount of money. Last edited by Kayven128i; 01-24-2013 at 02:14 PM.. My guess they damaged the sensor.
I bought used sensors for my winter setup and one of them sometimes stops to work properly and then I get this TPMS inactive but resetting helps to me. Also I'm getting inactive more often when it is really cold. |

Also i got a similar message before on another car and it was the sensor in the wheel. At first they tried to blame it on the window tent that we had applied but come on I have had tinted windows for years without any issue. Finally they replaced the sensor and t was fixed.

not usre i have never paid for it. all warranty work. Chances are they wont even notice that the tire was patched. If it is under warranty they willl likely just replace it.

First you can only reset the TPMS system when the car is running AND standing still. Hit the reset button via the turn signal stalk or iDrive. Then DRIVE the car until the TPMS system resets.
IF you need a new TPMS sensor its about $80 for everything. You could try your dealer and see what they can do for you. Thats what I would do.

Really, only 80 bucks for labor and the part? That's not bad at all. I might drive it a few times, I've heard for some people it goes away...and some people it just happens during the cold weather.
I appreciate your input, everyone. If they did see that it has been patched, they would still do the work for me right? (Installing new sensor)? Last edited by Kayven128i; 01-24-2013 at 05:34 PM.. |
