Radar Detectors in VA/DC

What has been everyone's experience. I posted this question in the general forum but no one has really bitten. I have a V1 that I have stored away for some time because I work in McLean and as many know cops/state troopers in VA are not the most pleasant.

My question therefore is, if I hardwire will I be able to get away with it? Does anyone have a similar setup and has successfully evaded VA/DC authorities?

I have a hardwired V1, and I've been using it ever since July. I make frequent trips back and forth from VB to NoVA/DC, NNJ, NY, and sometimes ATL. Never had a problem, even with cops passing me. I put the V1 right underneath the tint of the windshield.

I flip my hardwired V1 off when entering VA. Got pulled over once in VA because a hidden cop sniffed out the V1 somehow (was going 55 at the time).

interesting...so did he provide a reason for pulling you over, illegal lane change, no turn signal, or some other bs reason or did he cut staight to the chase and state you were using a detector and that was the reason that he was pulling you over?

He said something along the lines of "I saw you on that entry ramp, I was hiding under a tree", but he pulled me over 10 minutes down the road when I was going 55.

Some important details: I did not hear radar on the V1 when I was on the entry ramp, ONLY when he started coming up behind me 10 minutes later.

My hypothesis is that he was hiding but didn't have his radar gun on, but saw me on the entry ramp and then proceeded to tail me from far back to try and see if I would take off. He then switched his radar gun on which made my V1 go nuts so I kept my 55mph speed, but he probably had a radar detector detector because the first thing he said to me when he walked up was "give me your radar detector"

End result: no speeding ticket, just a radar detector ticket

Cops in illegal RD areas carry a machine called Spectre. Essentially every RD (well most) "leak" and give off signals when powered.

So even if the RD is hidden, concealed and still powered, the cop can detect it with Spectre.

Escort Redline, Max as well as Beltronics STi are undetectable, as they have special casing that does not "leak"

Pull up YouTube videos for testing with a Spectre machine against V1 and like

Had a hardwired V1 when I lived in Virginia from 2001-2008. Never had a problem.

Had it so that my rear view mirror would block all but the sensor, and then the remote display at the bottom of my drivers A-pillar.

Extremely hard to see from outside of the car

In the mid 1990's... I had a remote mod'd old Escort(the orignal one, aka the big brick!). I lived in Northern VA at that time. Three buddies of mine - we were all driving out Rt-7 to go to Summit Point HPE. As we crested a hill just before Rt340 we got busted. Only I had a remote radar detector. I was bring up the rear. The VA State Trooper swore it was my buddy in front of me that had a radar detector. After he could not find one(bc it was in my car! remote mounted! lol) He gave the first car a ticket and the rest of us a warning. That day we learned that old Route-7 is a "toll road" of sorts. lol

I also had a friend who was a DC cop. In DC using a detector carries a HUGE fine. I think +$5K... anyways... my buddy the DC cop told me how once some jerk pissed him off... and he arrested this guy and gave him one of the $5K tickets. He could not believe how much paper work it entailed!! He said it took him six hours to file all the paper work. And he told me he would NEVER again write up one of those kinds of RD teickets. lol

I have no idea how it is now. But IF you travel in NOVA I would not use a radar detector... bc the cops there have(use) the radar detector, detector!

I drive past police in Northern Virginia pretty much every day with my Escort Redline without a problem.

My trusty old Valentine 1 sits on a shelf since a cruiser tailed my Cayman S with it a few years ago. I'm pretty sure he KNEW I was running a radar detector, since he stayed RIGHT on my butt for about five miles until finally pulling out and passing by SLOWLY. NOT an enjoyable experience. I considered that a "Warning".

I also try not to look or drive like an asshat - flow with traffic, stay out of the left lane except to pass, don't speed excessively, don't drive erratically, actively watch for police all around, don't draw attention, don't have a flashy car, don't sport any stickers or personalized plate, don't run a loud exhaust (the PE's calling me though!), etc.

In my S4 I had a hard wired V1 with concealed display and Laser Interceptor jammers mounted in the grill. The newest Spectre RDDs can detect just about everything, but they don't give him an exact location.

Hurleys audio and video does a great job with the install, they have done all my cars.

The biggest thing is to admit possession even if you don't admit use so you don't have it taken as evidence.

The jammers are a great investment and hard to notice if you don't know what you're looking for

This is a pic of the S4 with the jammers mounted
