First service

So I have racked up 15,000 kms already and booked the car in for its first service yesterday. There are a couple things which I thought some might want to know.

For a while now, my car has been making a knocking type noise from the rear. Usually when at slow speeds. I was worried it may be a diff or suspension problem so had them check it out. I had to take a mechanic for a drive to try and show him what I was hearing. So after 10-15mins of trying to do it, I finally got it. Anyway... So the dealer ended up asking BMW Aus. They said there is a known problem in the fuel tank! I didn't catch all the explaination, but when there is a change of direction (reverse/forward/slight braking) the fuel pushes up against something in the tank which knocks against the tank wall.

I have been told it won't damage anything and that BMW are trying to think of a way to stop it and that when they do, it will be covered under warranty. So any of you who experience the same thing I suggest taking it to your dealer so there is a record of it happening.

Second thing which I am a little annoyed by, is that they didn't change the oil! Said it wouldn't be needed for ANOTHER 21,000 kms! Or the year 2011!!!!

There is no way the oil can be good for that long... Has anyone been told this? Basically the first service, they just checked everything. No parts needed.

Hey mate,

Wow. The knocking sound is exactly what i noticed recently, and same - ONLY at low speeds going over a bump or corners; i too thought it was the suspension or diff.

I actually got out of the car to look and listen when stopped and nothing!

I'll call my dealer today to ask what the sound is

No oil change? Sheesh.... I'd just ask them to do it anyway!

15000kms already BBK I had what I thought was my first service at 8000km last week. Apparently it was only an "INSPECTION". Service Lady told me that they just check all the oil and fluids, $190 for all of that. I could have done that and stamped my own book with my own BMW badge

I had my first BMW service at 10K Kms although it was schedulled for 25k..

Had the books stamped ,oil and filter replaced. Off hand $195.

They just didnt reset the service indicator so that it still alerts at 25k kms.

thanks for the advise on the knocking, i thought it was something to do with the brakes when i stop in reverse.

i've got 20k on the clock after 12 months but am being told the service is not due till 25k. Sylvania BMW say the oil is good enough to last. I already changed the oil at 12k as i am a non believer.

I did an oil change at 5,000km and did another oil change during my first service at 15,000km. I just hit 20,000km but my next service isn't due until 30,000km so I'll probably do another oil change in around 3,000km. I'd like to change my oil every 7,500km or so.

Where are you getting your car serviced BBK? I was getting my car serviced at Bruce Lynton Southport but the service department is shocking and they refused to do an oil change so I took my business elsewhere. The service person will always advise you that it isn't necessary for an oil change but you have to advise them that you want it done anyway.

i'm also approaching 15k fast and heard the same thing that at that service, nothing is changed. I got Andrew to change the oil and filter at 7000 and will probably do it again after the 'service'.

I'm starting to think that having a corporate deal where you get free servicing for 2 years is utter crap as they dont even change a part of the car.

Well the 'service' which was just a check up, cost me $148. I just found it odd that they said I didn't need to change the oil for another 21,000km... So thats 36,000kms before the first change...

Nice... $195! That's a great deal. The best price I'm getting is $255.

When I originally booked it in for the oil/filter service at 10k km's I was told that they would not stamp the books as it was a unscheduled service..

Then I told them what I thought about that policy in no uncertain terms , which gave them a change of heart and they then consceded and stamped the service books.

And it was $195..just checked the receipts.. Sylvania BMW if anyone is interested in Sydney.

BBK looks like I'll be heading to westside for servicing,or I might just ring them up and see what they say. They should be the same as Brisbane BMW since westside is owned by them

don't forget servicing is supposed to be free for 2 years if any of you are on the BMW Corporate Program.

our car is almost the same age! had the first service today.. it was also a visual inspection..

had a loaner, M-sport 320i e90 sedan le mans blue w lemon interior, for a day whilst the service was done. Was fun for a change, had most of the options like front/rear pdc, sunroof, i-drive etc..

Gadgets are fun.. but the drive.. i would still prefer the 1..

Hmm.. didn't realise about the noise at the back of the 1-er, would have to pay attention to it someday.

I went to an independent BMW service place at 3,000 km and had the oil changed. I'm a non-believer too... I still feel uncomfortable at 13,000 km driving around on oil that old :-)

I already had an oil change after the first 2000, the manager at Coastline said it is not necessary but a good idea. . There should be an optional oil change at 15000 listed now at 12 months.

I will be taking mine in for another oil change and just check to see how the oil is after 6000kms.

Haven't notice the knocking sound - but now that you mentioned it...

My 135 is at 26,000 Kms now and I changed the oil at 2500, 10000 and 17000. Its probably due now. I have never had an oil change service light. I have most likely waisted my money. I guess the engine has been well maintained for the next owner.

QFT.

I wonder how many people here are actually planning to keep their car longer than 3 or 4 years? My MINI only ever had the scheduled servicing (~30k intervals sometimes), was driven HARD, had 155,000k's on it when it went, and was still running as good as ever.
