Age of members and manual or auto?
Curious to see the age range and transmission choices. I am 65--geez that even looks old and have never had an auto. Oh, don't let the age fool you. I still run 40-50 miles per week and for you runners(Boston Qualifier '08/'09-- sub 4hr marathon). When I had my C5 Vette only about 1/3 were manuals--which was surprising to me. Ofcourse, when I started driving back in '58/'59 most of the fun cars were "stick shift". Remember, a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Nick

39 and auto but only because I couldnt wait for one to be built. Apparently in Oct of 08 there were no manuals close enough to deal. Guess thats what i get for living in the hills.
Anyway the auto is a fast shifting MFer and I actually love the paddle shifters. So its all good... |

27 Manual
I read a recent article stating only about 7% of all cars on the road are proper manuals. I've never owned an auto and I don't plan on it. Stop and go traffic about 80mins/day and still not worth it IMO. I think you'll get a falsely inflated result polling this group of driving/car enthusiasts, more likely to opt for the manual. Same goes for most BMW drivers... (badge whores and soccer moms aside.) I've recently pulled some old research comparing cognitive effects of manual/auto, all a bit out dated. I'm curious about the driving experience and unconscious effects created by the car and the subsequent driver performance...do auto trans (more importantly, less 'involving' cars) allow for a more distracted, poorer performing driver? Personally, I'm more disconnected from the driving task when I'm behind the wheel of an auto, more likely to make a mistake from inattention or laziness. That said, I think this "disconnected" element is diminished in BMWs in general as they are inherently involving vehicles. |

17 (but 18 on wednesday!) I have the auto with paddles. I wanted a stick, but my dad wanted my mom and my sis to be able to drive the car. And since hes paying for half of the car I got stuck with it. But at least I convinced him to not get iDrive!

Teach 'em!!!!! They'll be better drivers because of it. Every woman in my family drives manual, learned to drive manual first, and drive nothing but.
At the very least, they'll never be caught in a bind, stranded unable to drive that drunk/injured friend's car. edit: noticed that sounded a bit sexist...don't intend that at all. The complete opposite really. |
