So I decided to not buy a 1er...
Got a 2009 Mercedes C300 Sport, black on black, nicely equipped...even has a manual tranny.
Got $3300 off sticker, making it about the same price as a decently equipped 128i, and I prefer the Merc...was too good to pass up. I'll post pics when I pick it up if anyone is interested.

Congrats! Lets see some pics. I was in a very similiar position as you, I was THIS CLOSE to getting a TT roadster, and at the last minute decided to go with the 1er.

There's definitely something about a Black Mercedes-Benz. The epitome of elegance and class.

Coolness. I love how the new C-class looks and I've always been a fan of the AMG C variants.

It's a stick so it's in the high 6 second range. After driving a C300 manual and a 128i back to back, the difference isn't significant. I wouldn't say the 128 would "run away." The Mercedes has more torque so it may even be slightly peppier off the line. Either way, the cars are pretty well matched, with the edge going to the 128i in the 0-60.
