High mileage transmission service?

I have a 128i with the GM GA6-L45R and I just hit 200k miles, I'm not the first owner and it's likely the transmission fluid and filter have never been replaced. It's just recently begun having sluggish upshifts and I'm wondering if it is safe to do a drain and fill + filter change or if it will do more harm than good.
