Let's install the Rear Sunshades
Since I am not much a fan of aftermarket tint, I decided to try the BMW Rear Window Sunshades to keep the car a bit cooler in the summer. The Sunshades are sold as the side window shades (you get both the driver and passenger) and rear window shade. Not as nice as the rolling sunshades on the bigger models, but still very nice, and they install in seconds.
Each includes a nice storage bag for when the sunshades are not in use (rear sunshade on the right): The Sunshades fold up easily to pack smaller: And easily unfold: Installing the Sunshades Installation is very easy, to install the side sunshades, slide the back corner in first, engaging the rear clip (it simply slides between the glass and the C-Pillar). Then slide the front edge into place. Slide the front clip back and then slide it into place. To install the Rear Sunshade, slide the bottom edge in first and then install the top edge. When installed, you can still see out from inside the car: Exterior pics: |

They look good. I have the shades for the side windows and I am awaiting the one for the rear. They are nice quality, but I guess like all BMW stuff $$$.

Very nice! I have the power rear sunshade on my E46 and it helps a lot when I'm parked in the summer sun.

I was being a bit dramatic, it is comparable to the manual blind on the E90, not the power one (which is the ideal way to go). The rear one retails for $110 and the sides for $125 which probably is what tint costs. The e90 manual rear shade is very nice and I would prefer it over the 1 variation, but I am not sure if I want to see if it would work or not.

I’ve been driving with them in. You can see out fine, they are a lot like the mesh windscreens on convertibles. They are probably the same as the screens people use for babies in the back seats.

I highly recommend these. I installed them before our little heat wave this week, and they do reduce the load on the A/C as well as keep the interior temps down.

I had no idea BMW made these! This is great because I was disappointed they don't offer the power rear shade on the 1 series. I have had it on my 545i and currently on my 335i. That rear shade has been up since I got the car, even during the winter. The only time I put it down is to wash the window. It is great at night for helping to reduce the light of SUV's or trucks behind you.

Andy, in your view can the rear shade be left in place indefinitely - while the car is driven at night as well as daytime? As we approach serious sunny/hot weather in Florida, that would be my preference - assuming night viz and viz in heavy rains is still sufficient.
Thanks for the post; another worthwhile one from you. Jack |

I have not had enough hot weather to gauge how much of a difference the sunshades make. |

That looks good. I'm no fan of aftermarket tints myself, and I was thinking of getting these. I was doubtful about night visibility with these on, but hearing from you guys made me think that this is the best equivalent for tint. Thanks for the post guys!

You do get a "screen door" effect with headlights behind you at night and you diminish your auto dimming mirror function. The good outweighs the bad during the summer, however when winter arrives I will pull them out.
