Testing the Quaife LSD (Video)
Put together a short clip of me testing the Quaife diff It certainly does what it's supposed to, very happy with it so far, and I'm seriously looking forward to winter now!

Thanks By the way, I do apologise for the cheesy music choice, but it was never really going to be a classy video considering I'm doing donuts and powerslides in an empty carpark

Cool video, and that LSD looks to be a lot of fun. However, I can't get over the idea that the van in the back isn't the Libyan nationalists from Back to the Future...

I think the 120d is the smallest engine they do it for Enough torque for it to be warranted though (350Nm in the 120d, 400Nm in a 135i), especially in the wet or on snow
The Quaife cost me £890, about $1400, and £400 ($620) to mount. Definitely worth it for me, and I plan to do the same mod to every future BMW I own Compared to the cost of a 135i I would presume it's fairly negligible? Mind you a 135i is $130.000 in Norway so it might compare differently in the US.

I regret not doing a before/after comparison! Could have helped explain, to those who don't know, what an LSD does But then again, most 1-series owners on this site will have experienced the dreaded "one wheel burnout" at some point That's what made me buy the Quaife!

I fitted my Quaife at Birds and they did a top job (great guys) while I see massive improvement in traction it is now harder to drift on dry asphalt... Its somewhat good because you can exit corner/roundabout so much quicker but you must be violent with the accelerator to drift. In the wet however its much nicer/easier and more sort of "progressing" drift, much more pleasure

Yup, would be good with a video showing the improvement I have tried doing similar things earlier and it's not possible at all on wet tarmac, just end up spinning one wheel. It is possible to do powerslides but you have to be very abrupt with either throttle or steering (weight transfer) to ensure both wheels let go at the same time, and once sliding you have to maintain a very large angle of drift or it will snap back in line rather abruptly. Much nicer and more controllable with the Quaife
Strange that they don't have one for the 123d actually, some times they don't list every available diff on their site though, always worth giving them a call Very service minded people! I'm seriously looking forward to winter now though... even started looking forward to rainy days just so I can feel the diff doing it's job!

As it is basically a more advanced version of the ESP system (using the brakes to slow down a spinning wheel) I would presume it would be less predictable and slower to react than a purely mechanical solution like a torsen diff.
Check this vid of the 135i (same E-diff tech as the 123d), you can see the diff braking the inside wheel intermittantly, and the car moves around a bit as a result. That being said, you could not do a drift like that with an open diff without holding it at a much wider angle so it evidently works Edit: This video shows that the e-diff doesn't fully replace a proper mechanical solution in extreme situations. Compare it to this video of a 120d with a Quaife.
