Top Speed Limiter

Does anyone know what the top speed limiter is on a stock 2011 135 without the M sport package? My car seems to cut out at about 135-140...I thought it was limited at 155 as per usual.

I'm curious if there's an issue or I'm just hitting the limiter...

Are there many parts of Brooklyn where you can go 135?

Not safely, no...I usually drive way out of the city and find open roads that are much less traveled.

Of course, there's always a significant risk involved when you're on the highway so I try to be acutely aware of my surroundings. I'm hoping to get the car on the track next season so I can open it up without worrying about hitting a Deer (Or anything else) at speed...not to mention that little thought of being pulled over and cuffed.

Quite frankly, I don't ever hit that kind of speed on the street in Brooklyn and I only wrap it up on the highway if I am VERY confident that the conditions are favorable and even then it is a risk, but a calculated one. It is a tremendous sensation though...I highly recommend it if you can, safely. ;-)

Nice thing about living in the West. You can find arrow straight roads in the middle of nowhere that you can see forever on.
Good for speed runs.

Yeah, I hear you...I grew up in California (Santa Barbara / LA) but have lived out here for a little over a decade. I definitely miss the roads out there...being stuck in a grid with a 135 is hell, pure hell.

I used to live in Larchmont, so I understand about wanting to find a place to drive faster. If I were you, I would just head upstate, Living in San Diego offers many options for a spirited drive!

Speaking of top speed, what would a 135i coupe do without the limiter? I've heard some insane stuff like 175 mph. Maybe it was modded?

Fastest I've ever been was driving my buddy's Corvette back from Iowa City down a long, straight as an arrow 2 lane blacktop portion of Iowa Route 1. My buddy told me to go ahead and open it up, so I did and reached 150 before backing off. In retrospect that was probably the single stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. It was 3:00 AM and there were no cars or people anywhere around, but we were in deer country in the middle of deer season. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I have the delimiter and the power, seeing as hitting 155 is super easy running Map 7 on E85, just need to find a road to test it out. May be taking a trip to New Mexico in the next month or so, may test it out then.

You know, I'm really curious myself as to what a stock 135 would do without the limiter. I would almost believe 175 with a slight downhill and a tailwind...though I do think it's a bit optimistic. I'm pretty confident it would hit 160 though.

150 is moving...I hit 175 once as a passenger in a Lamborghini Countach (Yes, I'm that old) it was an amazing ride.

I think we've all done stupid stuff in the moment (I know I have back in the day). At least you made it through unscathed, you have a great story to tell and are a bit older and wiser for it.

With your list of mods I'm sure you can crank it up past 160...good luck, be safe and let us know! (Video is always welcome)

If you take I-40 and head to Santa Fe up 285 at Cline's Corners, you will find that road very agreeable to high speeds. I've heard an FD RX-7 can do 165 fairly easily there, and an unlimited S52 M Coupe isn't that different, in theory of course.

Remember that the 1er speedo is about 7% optimistic with 245's and a little less with 255's.

I'll be using a GPS as my the speedo only goes to 160 as I'm sure you know. Are the Conti DWS speed rated high enough to safely run 165-170? They are my winter setup. Yeah I'm confident my 1'er will at least do 165, as it gets to 155 in no time. Hopefully have 3" catless downpipes and AMS FMIC on before I make the trip as well.

Edit: Plan on sending buddy about 2 miles ahead of me to watch for traffic and police and such and make sure road is safe. I just wonder how bad the aero's of the 1'er are gonna hurt me at that speed.

I had my previous 335i with sport package up to an indicated 160 before I backed off. I imagine with speedometer error that was closer to a real 150 +/-. I'm guessing the 135i (ppk) should easily run up to the limiter with good stability. M1 I used to have ironically became very (scary) light at around 140 and I nver took it past 150.

Two things I noticed driving that fast. One is that you don't so much steer as you do aim for a point well down the road. Things are just going by too quickly and you need a very delicate touch on the wheel. The other is that it becomes a lot harder to go faster the faster you go due to air resistance. I knew this in theory by the experience is something else. The Vette climbed through 130-35 no problem, then the rapid acceleration started to die off. At 140 it became more of an effort to keep climbing and over 145 each additional 1 mph could be counted off slowly. The needle literally crept over 150. It could have done more, but my better judgment said ok, a buck fifty is good enough. Yeah, it may have been stupid, but since no one got hurt it's also a fond memory from my wilder days. [leans back, tamps the tobacco down in his pipe and says, "Son, did I ever tell you about the time I did a hundred and fifty down a country road in the middle of the night?]

Oh yes, I remember the Countach. I preferred Crockett's Daytona myself (yeah, I'm that old too).

Sorry, but Sonny's Daytona was a Corvette based repli-car. Looked pretty good though.

I've had my 135 up to an indicated 155, before I got the PPK, which I know is probably closer to 152. It gets there pretty quickly and it's actually very stable, didn't feel squirly at all. I backed down right away, and have not hit the limiter (yet).

Just make sure you find a no traffic, decent bit of road so you can see that nothing will jump in front of you (AZ 87 south of Winslow is good), and insure your tires are in top shape and inflated to the high speed pressures.

Without a limiter I'm sure it could make 175. But I don't think I'd want to be in it while doing so.

Well now, that explains why they had no problem blowing it up.
