I think exposed FMICs look nasty if they are without all that extra shrouding. Also having a bigger aftermarket one looks pretty cool.. here is amsfotos car, its just too badass

I like the mesh on unless an FMIC won't fit otherwise. If I want the riceboy look I would have bought an evo or sti.

I like how it looks with the mesh off. Much less boring.

Matt I told you you need to go with a huge front mount like this one(AA) or Stett. The opening on the 135i is huge and it looks brutal with a huge front mount that sits directly up front.

Agreed, it's there for a reason. Previous owning a Supra, and having an after market FMIC, a lot of us looked to install some type of mesh to prevent larger object from hitting the it. Not a good idea as my FMIC got pounded on over the years. But good luck to those who remove theirs.

Yeah but its also not a direct front mount, it still sits under the radiator not in front of it. Although it comes a little bit more forward than stock.

Has anyone done a DIY for this? I couldn't find it, and my center piece got kicked into pieces by some jackass. I guess it's time to take it out...

Pshhh, should have just bought a Scion then

Yea I agree, if someone wants to customize their car then let them do it. Not everyone is going to like a modification but I absolutely love the way the exposed FMIC looks (althought that black bracket needs to be removed and the entire FMIC needs to be exposed IMO).
Makes the car look like its got teeth and the frontend looks more aggressive and I love seeing a car with their FMIC exposed in my side mirror. Looks badass.

BMW had a great idea on having the FMIC sit underneath the radiator. First time I've seen this on a production car. You don't block airflow to the radiator. The N54 engine runs very hot. If you track the car you will see that water and oil temps run very high. On our 135i race car in SoCal 100+ heat days, we see these temps. We were plagued with heat related limp modes from the very beginning so reducing radiator efficiency by blocking it with a FMIC was a big no no in the beginning of R&D. Thus, that's why our FMIC doesn't block the radiator.

The radiator fan shroud in the back also extends lower into the backside of the intercooler itself. This means that the radiator fans are also pulling air through the intercooler itself. Again, this is a great idea so why mess with it. Our FMIC sits in the same spot and retains this. If you have the FMIC sit in front of the radiator, this shroud does not extend that far and thus you lose this great feature.

I wasn't stating that your intercooler was inefficient or its not a good design. I was stating about the look he was going for. If he wants the looks that puts the fmic upfront and aggressive like the pic of the 135i in this thread he needs a direct front mount. but like I told him before its still gonna look good either way he goes.
