Michelin PSS 255/35 rear tires rubbing over bumps
I just had 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 Michelin PSS installed on my 135 coupe. There's a horrible rubbing noise coming from the rear when I go over speed bumps or dip in the road. Just going to dinner I heard it 4 or 5 times. My car isn't lowered and I don't have wheel spacers. The hundreds of Michelin posts I've read, I haven't seen anyone reporting this.
6 month update: After putting a couple thousand miles on the tires I don't hear the sound anymore. Last edited by Adam135; 06-16-2013 at 01:21 PM.. |

Mine rubbed just a tad for the first few miles. I have stock wheels and my car isn't lowered either. This is no big deal... bc it is just a "slight" quick rub for the first few hundred miles. Really I only noticed it the first day or two... then it went away.
I think its the strands of rubber that are formed when they make the tire in the tire mold. These strands stick out from all over the tire. And I only noticed it when my LR tire got fully compressed when cornering hard and hotting a bump. After 400 kms I never heard the rubbing again. It was like the the first time when i switched over to PS3's. And this year (Spring) when I replaced my rear tires again with PS3 255's in the rear... the noise was heard a few times, but after 400 kms not any more. My advice would to go out and put some miles on those tires. I don't thinh they will rub for very long. I really did not even think it to be an issue - to mention it, bc the rubbing went away after the first week or driving.

Stock wheels.
That's what worries me, it sounds like more than a slight rub. The noise is quite loud when hitting a dip on the freeway, etc. I'll check the pressure this morning. Last edited by Adam135; 09-30-2012 at 11:15 AM.. |

Tires were 33PSI cold all around. Inflated to 36 front and 39 rear. I still hear a squeek over speed bumps and dips in the road. It doesn't seem as loud now, but that might be my imagination.

I don't think the tires could be rubbing Adam135. My rear tires are taller and also protrude more both inboard and outboard and I don't get any rub.
I recommend jacking up the rear of each side and looking in the wheel wells for any sign of rubbing or obstruction. Good luck. |

It does sound more like a suspension squeak than tire rub. Maybe when the car was on the lift something got tweaked? I have to take it in for the 30,000 mile check-up, guess I'll mention it. Hope they don't blame it on the tires.

Very odd. I ran the same set up with slightly lower offset wheels and never had a rub.

I have the same tires/ same size but with the arc-8's and I am getting a rub too. It was really bad under full compression when I hit a big bump or something and would make a loud noise. I thought it was the wheels and not the tires though. I couldn't figure out what was causing it.

I have 265/35/18s with zero rub. I doubt its your tires.

With stock 245's, stock wheels, stock suspension and no spacers there is so much room in there so I doubt upsizing by 10mm will enduce rub (5mm wider per edge). I'd only expect to get rub with 255's and say 15mm spacers, 10mm or 12mm should still put you within limits of stock arches (no roll).
Am I right? |

You say it's a squeak, but the only rubbing I've heard (not in my 1) sounds like a scrape or like a rough brushing sound. Might not be the tires.

Yeah, it's gotta be something else. I'll be dropping it off for the 30k maintenance sometime next week. Will post their findings.

Everyone, keep in mind not all tires rated as the same width are the same actual width. I changed from the factory 245mm RE050 RFT to 265mm StarSpecs and they are easily 30mm or more wider.
Nevertheless, even a wide 255mm should be ok on a factory offset wheel. It might be pushing it with some aftermarket wheels with less positive offset. Factory is something like +58 I think, and the best fit wheels are running +58 to +62.

Offset is all relative to the wheel width. +62 in a 8.5 wide wheel is different than a 9.5 wide wheel.

You can put some masking tape in the fender well where you think the tire is rubbing. Take a drive and see if the masking tape has marks or tears from rubbing. That will eliminate if it is the rubbing.

It's probably the tire rubbing on the plastic liner inside the wheel well. I have 19" Alufelgen SF-71's on mine with PSS 255/30/19 and it rubs the plastic liner if I hit a big dip in the road. Doesn't touch the fender itself. The side walls on the PSS's are more square shaped than some of the other tires like Falken which are more rounded. Try the tape thing like was mentioned earlier.

A 245 wheel will sit in the exact same spot on a 8.5 45et wheel as it will on a 9.5 45et wheel. |

225/255 NO rubbing

I've just put Yokohama ADVAN SPORT 225/255 tyres on stock MSport wheels and have no issues. I'm running 42 psi front, and 44 psi rear. Lovely smooth and quiet ride.

Just installed my 255/35 PSSs and they rub. They replaced PS2s of the exact same size which never rubbed. Can these two tires really be that different?
