harman kardon audio requires bmw assist?
My dealer says it's so (at least on the 128i).
The config tool on bmwusa.com says it's so. Is it really the case? I do like bluetooth integration, but feel like I'm essentially doubling the price of the harman kardon system, just to get bluetooth or fulfill some arbitrary bundling requirement. |

An option for you if you don't want to pay for the assist -- spend the $875 on an after market amp and speakers. (But I wouldn't change the face/head unit -- that would decrease the value of the car).
...if you go to a good place....$875 would go a LONG way and would be way better than the HK system. If I had to build another car that would be what I would do. But do I like the bluetooth...use that all the time. Just an option.

Well, I like Bluetooth, both for handsfree calling, and for easy streaming of music from my Blackberry. But since the new base model comes with Bluetooth without BMW assist, maybe it doesn't make sense to pay for BMW Assist.
That said, the HK sound system is actually pretty decent and I think worth the money, for me. So i'm 100% okay with that. |

I'd have to disagree Melbourne..
Yes, you can probably get a a louder better sound system for the money, but you're going to lose either trunk space or something of the sort. HK amp is integrated into the car, and the two 8" subs are custom enclosed under each front seat- THAT kind of customization will cost you easily over the 875$ they charge (However, with BMW Assist required, it's actually like 1500$ they charge which WILL get you a pretty sweet custom system) Either way, I bought it- bluetooth is a great perk, and the sound system is nothing short of amazing imo. |

Agreed, the HK is a good value IMO, but since Bluetooth is now free, there's no need to get the whole assist option for it.
But regarding the new price list, it doesn't make it clear to me that BMW Assist is now "free" with the base car. What am I missing? |
