Tram runs red light - hits my car, yet I'm at fault.

oh my god corey! i am sincerely so sorry to hear about this incident, but i am also very glad that you are unhurt. it could have been much worse.

more power to you for standing your ground on this. the principle of the law siding with the tram driver gives them carte blanche and is patently unjustifiable.

The photos are of an accident I witnessed last year, I was just illustrating the carnage trams are capable of. The pics aren't from today

Nooo!!! Sorry to hear Cozza. I think I'd be going straight to the the tram management people and police to register my complaint and get your side on record ASAP. Any witnesses to help you out? Hopefully the damage is not major.

It is true that trams always have the right of way... even they hit you from behind! (that is in insurance's eye)

Sorry to hear that and feel for you, but Good luck.

cozza I feel for you!

I have a hatred of trams that runs very deep. Actually it is more a hatred of tram drivers, and the way other drivers are in constant fear that a tram is about to jump out in front of them on a straight road!!!!

Since I live on a tram route as well.....that probably doesn't help.

So I truly hope you do your best to either stick it up them, or give them hell.

Cozza, I know the exact intersection you are talking about, as I pass there every morning too!
Sorry to hear about this!
I think I'll need to be really careful around there!

Right that's it. I plan to steer clear of Melbourne in future. It's too bloody dangerous with all those maniac trams.

Sorry to hear about your incident Corey. Best of luck with getting it all sorted.

So sorry to hear of your accident cozza. Good luck.

As a Sydney/Tassie driver, Melbourne's trams and weird tram road rules are always a source of confusion when I drive in your fair city.

Sorry to hear about the incident, I hope that the authorities do the right thing and reprimand the tram driver.
I am seriously considering the purchase of an in-car video capturing device as a safeguard against potentially wrongful judgements such as these. I have found one advertised in W.A. that uses GPS and G force sensors to automatically save video footage prior to and after a collision. I believe they are a fairly hefty investment at around $1k, but as my car is my office I think it would be a wise purchase.

If you are sharing the road with them, you drive around them as if you are overtaking on a freeway. Lots of fun in the 135i.....but damn annoying when the idiot in front is too scared to drive past the tram, especially when the tram is speeding to ensure it keeps everyone behind as it stops every few 100 metres!!!!

Those bastards think they are a law unto themselves. I have been opening my door to get out and kick my way into a tram before I thought it over. I now just give them payback by getting in their way as much as they get in mine.
I have heard that trams have right of way but never seen the relevant legislation. It supposedly works with buses too but I know that it crap.
I'd also be interested in how a moving object hits a stationary one and the moving object has right of way ?
I have no illusions about our so called justice system actually being of use to you but I would be doing some research on what legislation is applicable and make sure you actually have no right of recourse before bending over for these arseholes.

As everyone has said, thoughts are with you.

Tram Drivers are the Rogues of the Road. Most feel they have Royal Authority to do as they like, and when. They know they will win any collision.

Take for example, Whitehorse / Cotham Road. They accelerate to speed as fast as possible, then "Thunder" along as fast as they can, with absolutely no margin for error or ability to stop.

Beaurocrats crap on about car drivers doing 3k over the limit because "Speed Kills".

Trams shouldn't be allowed to do more than 45-50 kph anywhere. Bad luck if it adds 10-15% to travel times.

Hope damage isn't too bad.

PS I know. One day soon. I promise.
