my n55 once had icarbon catted dp, stock midpipe with resonator and bmw perf exhaust.
there was no annoying drone with this setup but it was pretty quiet inside the car. once i replaced stock midpipe with bmw perf y pipe, everything got louder, but then there is noticeable drone now >.< |

I'm not the biggest fan of the sound of a catless DP and stock exhaust. I LOVE how it sounds when it's opened up but when you're driving slow and in low RPMs on streets, it sounds a little weird.

So did anyone figure out what produces the vibration / drone if you have an N55 full exhaust system + DP? Is it the midpipes or the axle back?

No drone here.
Drone is often the muffler. I have a catless full single 3" system on my car and before I cut out the muffler it droned like hell and after its quiet as can be, at cruse that is.

Yeah I just have slight drone at 2k RPM if I am in fully automatic mode without shifting myself. I am just trying to figure out if its the mid pipes or the axle back. But based on your comment I am going to assume its the axleback so now I know that if I really get tired of it I can replace the axleback to stock and keep the DP and mid pipes.

What are you going by? N54 or N55? I personally have a N54 with catless downpipes and stock exhaust and it's really quiet to me. It's only louder by a bit when I go WOT, but daily driving it normally is just like stock...

N55. It's VERY quiet while cruising around with the windows up, but when they're down and you're at low RPMs it almost sounds like a tdi to me. Maybe I'm just weird. Either way, it sounds wicked when you open it up.
