Looks like a nice design with the cast end caps, for $600 I had to sign up, I know my car suffers from the high temps here in Texas, I will see if this helps cool the hot summer.

Per Carsten (the owner in Germany) the units produced for the US market are all bar and plate design, are manufactured in Germany but are shipped from their facility in California. I installed one in my 135i a few weeks ago, after conferring with EinserM and Dack. The group buy is a great price. See my post.

Here's a question....
Isn't the stock pluming the more restrictive part of the FMIC system itself? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of an upgraded FMIC? Not to say it still won't be better than OEM, but that you don't get max use out of it? I'm curious because I want an FMIC and can't for the life of me figure out which one to choose and why I should be paying $1000 for one. Just worried that this $600 one won't cut it like the others.... Please advise here |

http://cp-e.com/sites/default/files/files/n54FMIC.pdf If your stock intercooler pipes contribute 1psi of pressure loss and the stock IC is 2.5 psi, getting a replacement intercooler that is only 1 psi loss is still a 1.5 psi efficiency gain, regardless of the stock piping. "Max use" is a curious idea... One could also argue "max use" of your FMIC might also involve a GT3582R single turbo swap. Quote:

I ordered one last Tuesday and wondered when I might see it. I had hoped it wasn't one of those sign up and wait deals. When I arrived home from work this evening I was surprised to see a large box at front door. Anyway, the intercoller looks good and I can't wait to install it and collect some bugs.
And it is a bar and plate design. |

My home scale weighed it in at 19.8 lbs. Its a substantial piece, feels sturdy compared to a tube and fin design. |

Suds, good pix, thanks. Looks like a good product. Freon makes a very good argument in regards to value (quality/$) and pricing trends. Too bad I'm not ready for this type of purchase...snow tires/wheels are the next big puchase on my list...

Are the fins a straight through design?

My general understanding is that offset or louvered fin is usually better, and that density should be adjusted instead depending on core thickness (thicker core -> lower fin density). I.e. low density offset fins would be better than medium or high density straight fins. In fact on this type of design (also Helix, etc) the top thin part should probably have higher ambient air fin density, but I doubt they bothered (side note: I also doubt the tiny top part has much total charge air flow anyway, even with the nice endtanks, air has to go around an extra corner and the cross section is a small fractio of the rest of the cooler).
Question is how much of a difference is it? I would be interested to see some before and after intake temp logs with this intercooler. I'm guessing it is still way better than stock, but lack of offset fins may mean it is trading slightly less pressure drop for slightly less cooling than other designs that do use an offset fin.
