certainly is, I'm just starting to realize, it isn't as much the quality of picture i take, but the post processing i can do (i've worked hard at not doing post processing in the past and getting as nice a shot as i possibly can, but realize i'm wasting a bit of time.)

I have a long way to go as far as photoshop goes, but since i've worked so hard at getting my camera shots perfect to begin with, my learning curve should be interesting with photoshop.

I still have a long way to go with my photography, but every little bit helps.

^^^Man I am just learning now as well.....there is sooooo much knowledge online and here in the forums as well since we have a few pro/semi-pro photogs that are members. I still think getting the best possible shot really helps when you post process! (shoot RAW all day everyday! LOL)

I make sure to switch to raw when i know i'll be taking serious shots, but in my day to day travels, i just leave it in JPEG for convenience.

A really nice feature that came out on the 7D (and i think the 60D) is the button that switches it from one to both temporarily for a single shot or however long you hold the button down then switches back to your original setting.... I suspect i will be doing this a lot. Wish my 5D had this.

On the Canons there is the option for jpeg and RAW....I just set it and forget it usually. Going to get a 550D in a couple of months as well as new glass (f2.8 FTW finally)....

I like the button, that way you don't take up the whole memory card with 2 images of everything unless you are taking a picture you'll know you want to edit strongly. that's just my style. then again, i took about 7000 pictures over 1 month, so for the room i save not doing everything in raw as well, it's worth it in my opinion. If I edited every picture i ever took, i'd definitly shoot raw.

which 2.8 lens are you looking at? I have the 16-35mm 2.8 and the 24-70mm 2.8, both are very sharp. Still learning my way around the 16-35, but so far i'm happy, and the 24-70 is on my one camera about 90% of the time. and i've never second guessed it.

Canon is supposed to be coming out with a new version of the 24-70 sometime soon, i don't know if it will retain the 2.8 status, but it will get image stabilization, and will definitely be something I'll consider, though it will be hard to replace my current one knowing how sharp it is already.

I was just talking to JZhang about this very subject this past weekend
Considering the following: Canon EF-S 17–55mm f/2.8 IS USM or Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM probably Version I because I do not think I will notice a major difference with II and price of course.....I am still a novice photographer but I think getting some better glass will help (it will make me feel better at a bare minimum). Since you have a bit more experience than me what is your opinion?

personally, for the first high end glass, i would make it the one you would use every day.

if you get a more expensive telescopic zoom, you'll always want to be using it because the images will be so much sharper, but because the zoom will be so much on a crop body like the 550D you won't have much (if any) opportunity to use it indoors.

Even when outdoors, using a zoom like that is only necessary to a limited extent. don't get me wrong, I have a 100-400mm L series, and it's one of my favorites, and i pull it out of my bag as often as i can, but i don't get my moneys worth out of it at all. That's when i decided to get my second L series (24-70) and it's been pretty much perminantly attached to my camera except when i'm doing sports stuff for my girlfriend when she's doing horse jumping events. But but again, I'm on a full frame camera, so the 24-70 would be extreme for indoor use on the body you're looking at.

So for day to day indoor and outdoor use, i wouldn't hesitate to go for that 17-55 2.8 because that's basically the same range i shoot with every time with my 24-70 (anoying math when it comes to the crop body VS. the full frames.) It will be your best bang for buck. In my opinion.

good stuff That was what I was thinking after doing my research the last few days. Since I am here in Iraq right now I have had plenty of time to read a LOT of stuff....the photo challenge (Silhouettes) is intriguing,

Definitely. My shot is crap, but shows you what you can do from 3 feet away with a wide angle.

My 16-35mm on my full frame camera will let me stand about 3' away from someone and get their entire body in the shot and be sharp as a needle. I have a 70-200 F4 with the image stabilizer, I barely use it and it's an incredible lens. just the functionality of the telephotos is very limited. And from what i've seen and heard, you'll be very happy with the 550D I know someone who makes 20$ per picture with one at horse shows. and everyone hates her, but are still willing to pay her for the shots. And she's using kit lenses.

One more thing to consider.... Buy a half decent printer. a full high definition television is equal to about 3 megapixels. an 18mp camera is 6 times more detailed. if something doesn't look right on your monitor, print it before getting ahead of yourself and just deleting a pic.

I pointed this out to my friend the other day who shot a picture at 3200 ISO (really really grainy) and i printed it on a 4x6 inch page for him and he was astonished at how crisp and clean it printed. He's now not afraid to shoot higher ISO. Just don't rely on the monitor, or you'll end up spending fortunes trying to get perfection.
