Water Pump failed at 39,000 miles
Yup, I was stranded, and BMW assist had trouble getting me a tow.... I have a 2008 135i with 39000.00 miles, and my warranty expires on March 30 of this year. So, in this regard, I am very lucky. My dealer is recommending the Platinum extended warranty at $3500.00 because I have navigation.... My BMW friends are telling me not to do it... My car has been in service an inordinate number of times, mostly for little annoying things, but also for a few major issues like the water pump and ignition coils, etc. At this point I am totally befuddled: I am retired, the car only gets 20mpg, it is going to get expensive; however, I do own it, and it is fun to drive. I don't think I will keep it for three
more years. Part of me is considering dumping it for a high mpg Toyota, Honda, etc. I hope BMW introduces a 4-cyclinder 1 series that will get 30 mpg..... Totally confused, JoNack |

Why not just keep it and get the gold plan?

Surley the same engine that is incorporated into the new 328i will be available in the new coupe from 2013 onwards... 4 cylinder, 2 litre, twin turbo. Probably claimed by BMW @ 6.6 secs or so, but in real-world tests will be much faster. Probably get about 25% further per mile. I came from a 2.0 turbo and the bigger engine is awesome but smaller and lighter - more point and shoot in nature - is not to be underestimated.

That’s too bad about the towing. I lost a water pump in a BMW back in 2002. They were belt driven pumps back then. Called BMW assist and within ½ hour a flatbed was there to take my car to the dealer.
If you want 30 mpg you should try the diesel 1 series. For me the fun factor at 20 mpg in the 135i is far better than a car that gets 30 mpg. You may be able to get a better deal on the extended warranty. There are several threads talking about extended warranty. About 8 years ago I looked into a BMW extended warranty and it did not cover everything the new car warranty covers. You had to pay $50 each time you took the car in for work. I hope it all works out for you.

I'm on the fence too. Warrantee ends next year, I LOVE my car, but I have mods, and don't want to get denied service after dropping the cheddar on the extended warrantee.
Anyone know of any aftermarket warrantees? |

I was told that the extended warranty would have a $50.00 deductible for every service... And, it wouldn't cover clutch, brakes, oil changes, and other such items.... Do you think the price of the plan can be negotiated, or is it etched in stone????

I called around to a few dealers and the extended warranty prices are negotiable but not by a huge amount. You may need to get your service record printed at your dealer to send in to make a purchase.
Here is what I was quoted on my 08 135i expiring this month. 6MT, sports package, no navi x years / xxxk miles (this includes original years and miles) 7/70 6/100 7/100 Platinum 7/70 Msrp is $3500.00, I will sell for $2900.00 6/100 Msrp is $3380.00, I will sell for $2780.00 7/100 Msrp is $3900.00, I will sell for $3300.00 Gold 7/70 Msrp is $3140.00, I will sell for $2540.00 6/100 Msrp is $3040.00, I will sell for $2440.00 7/100 Msrp is $3490.00, I will sell for $2890.00 |

Just to add my .02, my water pump failed 4/15/2012 with 56k on the clock. Was covered under my CPO warranty. Pretty much same situation, was driving the car on the highway, cars first out of town highway trip, about 140 miles round trip, red temp light came on, fan went haywire.
My service advisor said would of been a $1200+ repair, thank goodness for BMW roadside and warranty! |

Is it coincidence that the 135i's engine mechanicals seem to be very problematical?
High pressure fuel pump failures, now water pumps..... Worrysome.

My $0.02...
Just keep in mind these types of failures can happen to any car Mfg. I replaced a water pump in my Camry and 4Runner but the cost was about $500 each. One also has to consider the number of parts in an automobile. I used to work for a component Mfg and our parts were used in motorcycles and cars. Our warranty statement was clear in that "Only 90% of the parts achieve FULL life". Thus, 10% could fail from day 1 to lets say 1 million miles of travel. Yeah, the HPFP is different but it appears to have subsided with a change in Mfg (supplier) and 10 yr - 100K mile warranty. I myself love BMWs and the 135i is my 3rd and definitely not my last.

Here are a few options (from someone over 50) that aim to be somewhat cost neutral.
Go check out a V6 Mustang, Hyundai Genesis coupe, VW Jetta GLI and the new Subaru BRZ. They would be accessible with minimum outlay on a trade in. I saw these at the NY auto show, and drove the Mustang. While not in the league of the 135 on paper, they may be as much fun from a practical sense and have good gas mileage. At least you would have some fun going through the test drive process. Then, you can better decide to keep the 135i, or move on. Another option is to take some risk and hold on to the car until next year and check out both of the 1 series then. Perhaps change to a lease, which I view as having value because it gives you the option to buy the car at lease end. You may be wishing you had that option now. Finally, you could just go lease a new 135 or 128 now, and pocket some cash. I don't like the extended warrantee idea, but that's just my view. Not really scientific. Good Luck! Let us know your decision.

My 2001 325Xi went through 3 cooling fans in a 6month period until the new design (mfg) were in the system.

I also FINALLY got the HPFP replaced (after many dealer visits) & now at 52k the electronic water pump failed. I did purchase an extended warranty (non dealer) that covered all but $20.00 of the $915.00 bill. Common for this to fail at such low mileage?

Usually it pops up around 100,000 miles though. 39,000 just sounds like a defective unit unless it becomes a trend.

Common? Yes, and truly a mystery as to why they are so short lived, other than to make BMW lots of bloody money.
