Ditching the RTFs on new 128i

My car is off the coast of Baja and I pick it up in around a week. It has the M-Sport Style 207M staggered 7x17/7.5x17 (which I find attractive enough for the time being), but everywhere there are horror stories about the RTFs and I'd like to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Stock is 205/50 x 225/45. Interestingly, the 205s are always measured on a 6.5 inch rim for their baseline so when I change to a 215/45 (a hair shorter), I get much better options.

I'm thinking Michelin PSS 215/45 and 225/45.

Thoughts?

Beyond the advantages of non-RTFs, I'm hoping for a little less understeer. (not expecting miracles)

Eventually, I'm leaning towards 17 x 8 OZ Alleggerita HLTs all around, but that's a ways off. Again, thoughts? Are they durable enough for a street driven vehicle, well made, etc?

You'll have less understeer if you go square.

Since I already said square rims are a ways in the future, are you suggesting I go 225 on the 7 inch rim or 215 on the 7.5 inch rim? Or neither?

I was also thinking about getting a spare set of the 207M rims and using the 7.5s in the summer and 7s in the winter with an AS tire. Considering winter in Northern California, they should last darn near forever and the 207Ms can be picked up relatively cheap here on the forum from time to time.

I think you'd be fine running 225's all around on those rims. The second option would be ideal so you could rotate without issue.

i have 225's on my winter 17's ( some bmw replica) Its very fun & stable.
I think ACS even recommends 225's widths for the e82. if you have time look up user AooooH and his posts in the summer had him state that ( he has some hookup at ACS)

Why not go to 18"s ?

I just purchased a 128i and looking at wheel options myself.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who realizes the benefits of 17" wheels, and that their only loss is subjective bling. I would think you could get away with 215 square for sure, and maybe 225. I run a 205 square for my winter setup on the stock 207s.

Summers will be 235 square Super Sports on a 17x8.

Forum member JimD (128i Conv) has 17" wheels and changed to a Michelin PSS 225/45/17 square set-up. According to his post, he felt the change was for the better.

I have nothing against cosmetic mods, as long as they aren't to the detriment of performance. When my associates say "you should get 18's or 19's" I patiently explain some basic physics with the example of ice skaters. Arms out = spin slow, same mass arms in = spin fast. Their only response: "But it sure looks sick".

My only concern with going to the 225 on the 7 inch rim is potential loss of subjective response (since I have no real way of measuring it). I'll look up JimD's post and give it a read

I just picked up a 09 128i and the guy previously has been running 215 all around on the stock RFT and it sucks big time, there's hardly any rubber in the back end lol

225/40 all around will give you more contact and you'll enjoy them much more.

I'm personally going to run 225/40 and 255/35 on 18's

If you don't go square, you'll probably have the same understeer that the 205F/225R has, I think.

Sounds like we are completely in line with each other. I put on the BMW performance CF trunk winglet, but I will never go for bling wheels.

I definitely think switching to non-RFTs will be a great move forward for you. So many other options that will perform very well. The advantage of going square would be less understeer and the ability to rotate, so that's also a plus!
