Should my new 128i be lagging on acceleration??

Love my car, but wondering whether it is normal to have a slight lag on acceleration a) as part of the break-in period or b) simply because it's not the 135?

My friend who's a car guy said it was a "transmission issue" (issue???).

Not worried, just wondering if I'm missing something. I'm not a car guy, but a guy who loves this car.

Thanks!

Stick or automatic? If it's an automatic do you have it in sport mode?

It's the induction system switching from economy to power, it takes a second to wind open. In the 135 they have the older style VANOS system this added to slight turbo lag (there has to be lag due to the nature of the turbo) then people start complaining about lag. If people want power and throttle response they need a big engine with individual throttle bodies aka e92 M3.

^ Yup, that's the strangest sensation I got on my first 328i drive. DS or M solves the problem and that is the reason which convinced me to take a plunge and get a manual.

Is this just a perception with the electronic throttle?
I found it quite different when I changed cars and the difference in the feel / response from the actual pedal push to the way the car went.
Now it just feels normal but at the time it was a little weird!

Every BMW has VANOS. The Valvetronic lift control system in the 128i uses a 100A motor, so "throttle" response is near-instantaneous.

Thanks for the explanation.

The throttle response may be near instant but the onset of good acceleration may be the delay, BMW may have more aggressive valve timing map in the auto DS mode (at the detriment of economy) for more rapid onset of acceleration.

you guys with the step can try the 25 sec reset trick that works on other bmws. with the engine off, but with all the accessories turned on (press start button a couple times), hold down the gas pedal for 25 secs. then just start the car.

a common response after doing this is "i never thought i would like to drive it in D"

I don't know about the 128 but in the 135 if you are in drive and you pull the shift lever to the left towards you it goes into sport mode and it shows as DS on the LCD between your speedo and tach.

It basically remaps the throttle response to be very sensitive and makes the gears change at or near red line.

Interesting, I didn't know BMW did it, Mitsubishi made a big deal of this a few years back. The car watches your driving style, and adjusts throttle response over time based on that. Resetting the Throttle style will temporarily set the car back to default, which MAY be a little more agressive.

Personally I think pushing the stick over to Sport is by far the most affective way of getting more fun per foot press

DS only affects the transmission's shift points. It does nothing to the engine.

not this crap again... BMW transmissions do not store long-term adaptations based on driving style.

True, it does nothing to the engine but it not only changes shift points it makes the throttle response a lot more resposive.

every automatic ive ever driven has a minor lag before power hits in. this is one of the "cons" to getting an automatic.

I haven't noticed any lag in this auto. The torque converter locks at launch supposedly so I wouldn't expect any lag.
