Snow + Summer Tires = Rage *pics*

I didn't plan on driving in this weather, but I had to move my car out of the driveway to let my mom go to work. (not sure why she felt like going in, there is 7" on the ground and nothing has been plowed properly).

It took me two hours to make it back up the street, I had to wait for the plow to throw some sand down and get the soft layer of snow off the top of the ice.

Needless to say, these tires are completely useless and dangerous in this weather. I am in a very bad mood today.

As you can see in the photos, the tires are completely covered in a layer of ice.

Even if you don't plan on driving in the snow you need winter tires. Those stock bridgestones are way too unsafe in even plain old cold weather.

Very nice.
Yes, those summer tires are not for this snow, that's for sure.
I'm a few miles further north of you and wanted to move my wife's front wheel drive Acura Integra into the garage after she drove to work in our 4-Runner. We have new all season tires on the Acura. A slight up hill and attempting to back up the hill took me about 1/2 hour which finally required some guick shoveling down to the icey surface below.
This snow also seems to be particularly slippery, very dry and keeps blowing over where I've cleared.
My 135 sits nice and warm inside the garage for at least today. We'll see how the roads are tomorrow. Maybe it'll sit another day to avoid the majority of road salt being splattered around today.

I've gone through the winter with no issues on the stock summers. In freezing weather they are alright. I read all the warnings before the cold hit this year and was really nervous, but actually it wasn't bad at all. I don't have issues until there is snow or ice.

I was on my stock Bridgestones thorugh the month of december and I kept braking loose (I was very light on the throttle). COuld not stand it anymore. I bought Pirelli 240s and the difference is unreal. I've also driven through 6 inch snowfalls with absolutly no issues on my snows.

Just to give an idea of the tire's capabilities, I can get traction fine after 2nd with JB3 on map 4 in 20 degree weather in the dry.

If these tires are really that bad, wow I've been missing a lot. I got the car in November and have only been driving it in 40 and below temperatures for the most part. This is normal for me lol.

But my point is why do it? Why put yourself in a dangerous situation when you don't have too.

They don't seem bad until you get into an emergency situation. With very cold roads and cold tires the traction is WAY down. I realized that in two separate panic stops (one for a squirrel in my 135 and one for a very stupid person in a SUV while driving our Cayman S with PS2's ) on the same day.
You just don't stop any way near as well as with warm weather.

BE Warned !!!

I don't feel like I've been in any danger at all, or put anyone around me in danger (obviously more important).

But to each his own...maybe you had a bad batch of tires. Mine have been performing great until snow hits.

5500 miles since November on the summers and no close calls, scares, or reasons to panic and immediately park the car and buy a winter setup.

I can understand that, tires are the last thing you want to take risks with.

Ultimately, the driver is the most important part of the car. You can have an idiot with snow tires be dangerous on the roads as well. A good driver takes all surroundings and environment into account when getting into an automobile and adapts to get from point A to point B safely without issue.

...until you started this thread. Take it from a guy who has driven 22 Canadian winters and counting: you never know when the weather is going to turn, and I'll bet that applies to Maryland, too.

We were +7C (about 39F) the other day and had a flash freeze down to -10C (about 20F). It was a bit of a lottery even with snow tires. You just never know...

i can understand where you come from...i've gone through a couple of canadian winters with no snow tires as well.... as long as there isnt much ice and snow, the summers are just fine for commuting around. i dont see why everyone here is overreacting either.

Baby's sitting snug in the garage today - even with great snows on it's not worth the risk if you don't absolutley have to.

You're playing roulette trying drive in winter weather with the stock run flats. One day you may be kicking yourself hard for not springing for snows.

I heard it snowed in Alabama. I doubt it snows there much.

Driver skill aside, running summers in cold winter climates is a risky move. The issues lies in the emergency situation which you simply cannot avoid. I don't care how skilled you are...sh*t happens. Once I noticed slight instability in corners I ordered the snows. Over the time I expect to own the snows, they'll essentially pay for themselves by not running expensive summers 4 months out of the year. To me..that's worth the fluke snowfall/icing and fun factor of driving in it.

Needless to say, she's tucked away at home today. Took the wife's Jetta. It's a lease and the driver skill level down here is questionable...not worth it.

BTW...the 1 does FAR better than the Jetta. no comparison at all. The Jetta felt unstable and struggled to climb slight inclines. Last time I had the 1 in the snow, the wheel barely broke traction, it handled every obstacle and short stop better than my E46 330xi with all-seasons. Shows that great balance and handling goes a long way with the right rubber.

Honestly to me this is a psychological thing... I live in philly not far from the orig. poster at all and I waited until beginning of jan to put on snows.... I just kept telling myself "oh you will be fine it doesn't snow much, it never gets THAT cold"... just b/c I didn't feel like shelling out the cash... but eventually I realized that I needed to stop being cheap and accept the fact the ride SUCKED... even on perfectly clear days but when the temp was below 40... that and the fact when I hit 70+ MPH I could feel the grip just getting lost...

And after I got the snows on, I was in SHOCK at what I was putting myself through riding around on the run craps in the freezing temps...

So long story short... it's worth it to get the winter tires no matter how much you "feel" like you don't need them if you live in an area where temps get cold and snow can hit...
