Exclamation $946 for brake pads, REALLY?

Hey how are ya, relitivtely new on here. I bought a mint 08 135i M sport a few months back and love it, wouldn't change a thing!

I've had a bit of brake squeel from the fronts but its been intermitent to the day and conditions, so no big deal right. I brought the car in my last time back at home to have them checked, being that I only bought 2 months ago and haven't put more than 3500km/2000mi since I drove it off the lot.

The service woman is trying to set me up with a appointment a hands me a quote for $946(with a straight face I might add!), she's telling me that the cars due of the service and to be expected. OK I can live with that, the part that caught me off was the price! I'll pay it but not before I ask the question.
-Do I need to go thru BMW service for these pads in order to keep from voiding warrantee?
-Is this the way things are going to be in order to maintain this love affair with my car? I should stop calling my car Awesome, and rename it as a dependant!

Thanks in advance for your replies.

1.) No, you can go anywhere.
2.) If you go to the dealer and not an independent...yes.

That was the price I was quoted when I needed to change out the pads and rotors on my Subaru Impreza. I'm surprised that's all they are wanting to charge for you.

I would make sure you even need pads, the 08s and up had issues with squeeling, it is normal. My pads are new and squeel sometimes.

Considering that you're in Canada, I was expecting a lot more.
That price is what they charge in the USA.
But it includes the rotors, not just the pads. And for all 4 wheels.
You can do it yourself, unless you're completely clumsy with tools, and save at least half of that cost.
Even if you need to buy the tools (a torque wrench and some lug nuts) they get paid off the first time you do it. From that point on, it's pure saving.
Brake change is the single most bang for your dollar service that you can perform, on any car. Learn it. It'll be worth while.

Newer BMWs have thinner than typical brake rotors. Often, when new pads are in order, so are new rotors. Don't know if the whole job would add to the figure you were quoted, though.

I'd guess that since it is a dealer, they just change the rotors when they install new pads, without bothering to check the condition of the rotors.. If you have access to an independent service garage that works on BMWs, you could get an opinion from that place.

Just a thought.

I have less than 500 miles til my warranty expires. Fuck. And I have a lot of running around to do. Need to cough up $2000 or whatever for the extended warranty.

You can probably buy pads cheaper from a dealership online (like tischer bmw or united bmw, try getbmwparts.com or contact Dan@UnitedBMW here on the forum) and either do the install yourself or go to a different dealership. A lot of times dealerships have body shops that are either owned or affiliated with the dealership so they will not count "against" your warranty. These shops can usually do most (if not all, or more) of the same things the service dept does and their labor rates can be a little cheaper.

Also, my brakes squeak too and I have a 2008. One guy had squeaky brakes and it turned out his brake pad sensor came loose and was causing the squeak. Mine were fine; my dealership said it's normal and just readjusted the brakes and changed the fluid. The squeaking came back pretty quick. I think I'm just going to upgrade to Hawk brake pads.. not much more expensive and they have better performance, less annoying brake dust, and are less prone to squeaking.

BimmerB! That's the nature of the beast. You will never catch me driving a European car if i couldn't turn wrenches in my driveway and do simple repairs/maintenance. To make you feel better, i asked the local dealership what they charge for an oil change for my E46 M3.....$310 Thank God for cold concrete

brake squeal isn't a bad thing. Annoying, yes, but it's no real indication of your car's stopping ability.

Give it a Google...

Brakes are a really hard thing to get covered under warranty. Its a high-wear item, and there is no real proof if the problem is caused by the part itself, or by abuse by the driver. I went thru a long argument with my dealer and Subaru of America when I went thru the brake problems I had. They wanted to charge me for the replacement. After a couple hours of back and forth, they finally decided to cover it under warranty. It wasn't easy.

Thanks for the reassurance, I know its not but it makes a nice car, not so much! Like a seeing a 10 in a bikini then noticing a tampon string hanging!
