Good Deal on Oil Change Kit (7qts + 1 filter = $59)
FCPEuro has 7 quarts of BMW Castrol 5w-30 & filter for $59 with free shipping on any order over $49.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-oilchgkit6327 Tischer offers the same kit for $76 shipped so I thought this was a pretty good deal. I know sometimes dealers send e-coupons for $79 oil change but I find those dates always to be the most inconvenient (last 2 I got were both on holidays or the day after). |

That is a good buy and gets you genuine BMW parts. It is still cheaper to buy Mobil 1 0-40W European formula from Walmart and a Mann 816x filter over the internet, however. For instance, my local walmart gets $23.56 for a 5 qt and 7.74 for individual quarts of Mobil 1. I buy two 5 qts but if you did this the easy way you are still out only $39.04 for oil. Cheapest price I saw on the filter was $5.57 from National Fleet Parts but I don't know about their shipping. Titan Direct (reachable from Amazon) gets $12.86 delivered. If you got from Titan you are still at only $51.96. So if you stick with the 5 qts and get a really good buy on the filter, you can be under $40. If you do it the easier way with Mobil 1, you are still at about $50. Both undercut the BMW parts while sticking with quality materials.

Awesome deal, thanks OP! Yeah you could save a few dollars by going to walmart but who wants to deal with that mess, and what's your time worth? Oh, and the final price was only $57

I'm not due to change my oil until December. How long can these unopened bottles sit on the shelf? I assume they can sit for a long time?

Another good source for the filter is Advance Auto. Their website gave me a price of $12.49. This thread inspired me to place a Amazon order, however, at about $9.50 with free shipping. I had to add a few other things, of course, but I wanted one of the items so the filters were more "filler" to get above $35 with stuff I know I need. If you haven't planned ahead and need materials, Walmart + Advance Auto can get you quality materials at a fair price. I also agree with the comment about not switching to Mobil 1 until you are out of warranty. I don't think it's a big deal to switch back and forth but I didn't do it either. I used a couple oil change kits using BMW oil while under warranty and went to Mobil 1 after the warranty expired.

If you store your oil in a climate controlled environment, un-opened, you can store it for years and have no problems.

It's not a matter of warranty. The concern is switching between a 5w-30 to 0w-40 back and forth during such short intervals (or every 5k for me at least).

Switching between the two, as long as they are both LL-01 should cause no problems. A 30W LL-01 oil is a very thick 30W, so not that much thinner than a 40W.

Like I said, it's my preference. For the few bucks more to buy Castrol 5w-30 and stay consistent with my oil changes, it's worth it. I have nothing against M1, I use it on my track car all the time.
