Had a service appt on the last day of my factory warranty and complained about the armrest. Was expecting "no fault found" to be honest, but they replaced it and now 100% creek/squeak/groan free!

My .02
Thanks all for the help. This was driving me insane.
I tried two methods listed here and it got rid of 90 percent of the squeaking. The remaining noise is very tolerable. 1) I liberally applied armor all around the hinge area and anywhere plastic surfaces came together. 2) I placed a small microfiber cloth (folded once) between the bottom and top pieces in the back where the plastic comes together. The cloth was one I got to clean my glasses. Armrest and cup holders in these cars are a joke. Good thing they are brilliant otherwise....haha |

Here is the BEST method I've found.
Buy some 1/4 thick felt with an adhesive back. (Think of what you would use to deaden the sound of a cabinet door slamming shut, they sell this stuff at the hardware stores.) Put a strip or a few pieces just under the hinge of the armrest (the console side, not under the armrest itself. I'll post a pic later of what I'm talking about. If you did it right, the armrest - where the hinge is - will sit on this felt piece which will raise the armrest a few mm and help deaden any vibration sounds. |

I guess it's time to unsubscribe from this thread; it's just too funny. BTW, still squeak-free after 50K miles and 4.5 years with the method in post 1, but hey, whatever works for you... ;-) ianc

The felt has held up so far.. may switch to rubber if it doesn't though. |

A while back I mentioned I used 3m double sided Velcro to solve this problem on my 1er. I placed the loop side Velcro as shown below, no creaks since!
I found the biggest difference was when I placed velcro on the round hinge mechanism. The plastic here showed signs of wear from the two panels rubbing and even after I did the door on the console it still creaked, so I tried that and it solved the issue.

Only parts you need are #14 and #15. the u shaped metal bracket is already on the car. Make sure you state what color your interior is on #15

Thank you all for the thread..... I took my car under warranty, rattle never went away. Every time they worked on it made it worse. Got fed up and ordered a complete new armrest. Worked for exactly 2 years and 2 days when parts warrant expired then when I said, man 2 years no creacking...BOOM..... Creak-a-gedon. So I already replaced the armrest on my dime once. Not doing it again. Doing the armrest delete. Crazy design. My ZHP has 15 year old arm rest that doesn't do this...crazy.
