Which of these winter setups should I get?

We're about ready to get winter wheels and tires for my wife's Space Gray 135i M-sport coupe. I've read the winter sticky thread, and just want some opinions from you guys.

Wheel Options (17"):
Moda MD8 (17x8, ET40)
ASA GT1 (17x8, ET40)
Borbet LV5 (17x7, ET35)

Tire options:
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3
Dunlop Winter Sport 3D

We're not sure if we should get 205/50-17's or 225/45-17's. We're in Kansas where there isn't a whole lot of snow (hence the performance snows instead of studless). Maybe 3 or 4 times per winter with 3-4" each time. Dry performance in the cold is more important than deep snow performance. Which size would you go with?

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. And if we've missed another obvious setup, let me know

I like all of the those styles a lot, but with a gray car, you may want to avoid the dark borbet wheels. If you go with the borbets, you wold probably want to go with 205/50's, although you can usually squeeze 225/45's on the 7" rim.

I would go with either of the other two with 225/45, especially since you don't get too much snow. The fitment will be fine with any of those wheels and anything up to 225/45 in size. If you went up to 235, you may get rubbing.

I like the Sport Edition F10 Silver/Black wheels myself. Someone here has them on a space grey and they looked great. Edit. Found it. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=44

I also concur on going with the 225/45 tires. You don't need anything skinnier for Wichita snow.

I would say the Moda wheels with the Dunlops.

Have you considered Pirelli 240 Sottozeros?

Thanks for the comments. I think we'll end up going with the 225/45-17 tire size. I haven't really considered the Pirelli 240's since they're rather expensive and I haven't seen much info on them. But I'll take another look.

As for the wheels, I suppose the best thing to do is let my wife get whatever she wants - it's her car. She already vetoed the Rial's and the F10's, by the way, so those are off the list.

Thanks again. I'll certainly close out the thread with an update and maybe a pic once we've got it all worked out and installed.

Yeah they are a bit expensive, but the cost is qualified IMO. They cost as much as the stock runcraps, yet dont fall apart when hit with a large pothole, dont rattle the car to pieces, and they dont have nearly as harsh of a ride.

I have 18" Pirelli 240 Sottozero RFTs and I love em.

There is a member selling a set of 17" 240 RFTs with wheels for like $800. He only used them for one winter. You might want to check that out.

I just received a set of the Borbet's with 225 with Blizzak LM-25s. The 225s work fine with that wheel.

For those of you who have one of these wheels, do you have any pics of them on the car?

I'm particularly curious about the ASA. On the Tire Rack sample picture, it looks like the lugs are gently recessed back from the face of the rim, and the whole thing is concave a little. But in a picture I found of a wheel on a car, the face was nearly flat and the lugs were sharply recessed.

I ordered a set of GT2s with my winter tires and they should be here this week sometime. I don't plan on mounting them for a few weeks, but i'll shoot a profile of the wheel/tire and post it up.

My setup came a couple days early... Just moved to Chicago and I forgot that south bend is really close... ground shipping only took 1 day.. haha.

As promised here are the pics of the GT2s. The GT1s should look similar (except for finish). As you can see there is a slight concave to them, I think they look dynomite.

Sorry for the crappy pics, iphone + dark storage room at my apartment complex don't make for print-ready images.. haha.

In case anyone is wondering, they are 225/45 Blizzak WS60.

bring on the cold!
