Limp Mode, Weird Noise on Acceleration (PLEASE HELP)

So here's the story,

I have a 2009 135i with 49,000 miles on it. Only mods are BMS downpipes and Meisterschaft midpipes.

I was driving from PA to NY when I noticed a strange whirring noise coming from the engine bay upon acceleration. I pulled over and looked under the hood but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. The noise went away and I drove 100 miles to NY.

Later that day I was driving and the car went into limp mode and white smoke (not very thick) started to come out of the exhaust when accelerating. The smoke stopped after a bit of acceleration.

Now when I drive the car, I hear the whirring noise as I accelerate and it goes into limp mode shortly after I start driving. Once it goes into limp mode there is no whirring noise upon acceleration. Note that there is no smoke.

I scanned the car and I'm getting three faults:
  1. 3100 - Boost-pressure control, deactivation
  2. 2A98 - Crank shaft - inlet camshaft, correlation
  3. 2A99 - Crank shaft - outlet camshaft, correlation
Took my car to BMW and they told me that they would not be able to diagnose my car with the downpipes in due to the faults being thrown. So I ordered a set of stock downpipes and will install them later this week and take it back to them.

In the meanwhile, I'd like to know what the possible causes of this issue are. From my research I know it could either be:
  • Blown turbos.
  • Worn camshaft bearing ledge
  • Bad VANOS solenoids

What do you guys think?

I tried to get a video of the noise but it didn't come out very audibly. I can try again if it would help.

who put on the downpipes? i know when my dad swapped out mine he didnt position the clamp properly and it blocked the wastegate from opening. under WOT it would go into limp mode. but would go back to normal after restart.

EDIT: i just re read your thread. maybe ur turbos shot...

White smoke is usually indicative of coolant being combusted (Or not as it were.) My guess is for turbo-related issues before VANOS or cam.

You might do a search here for dealers who will work with modified cars; IIRC someone mentioned one on Long Island.
