Thanks....that makes sense too. Is that the sensor that is in the headlight housing that you are speaking of?

No. There are two sensors; one on the left front lower suspension control arm, similar to the picture above, and one on the right rear lower control arm.

Roger that! I'll take a look when I do that front sway....just to get an idea what I'm in for. I'm at the point that I'm going to be doing a lot of part replacement, but I'm ok with that. 150K....I want 150K more!

Yes sir! Most of it was highway driving. I've had all of the standard issues and I'm at the point now that I'm starting to replace a lot of parts because I'm going to drive this beast into the ground. That and not having car payments is kinda nice.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'm having the same headlight issue. My headlights are 'dipping' moving down then up similar to when the car starts) every 2-3 minutes while driving or while sitting with the car running. I'm wondering if replacing the rear sensor mended the issue. Or if both sensors required replacements. Or whatever it took to get the problem resolved.

Probably should have said this earlier but I'm driving a 2009 135i coupe with 106k on the clock.

I'll also note that I positioned the car facing a flat wall and marked where the headlight cut off was stood on the rear bumper and the lights obviously moved up (rear end went down) and maybe a second and a half later the headlight moved down to their original position as they should, same when I stepped off the bumper (moved back up). So it would appear the rear sensor is still doing it's thing.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't believe the sensors are used for active and constant headlight level control while you are driving. They are only used to set the headlight level at initial start up, then that level is set until the next start up.

I would try disconnecting and reconnecting the main connector on the headlight. You may have an intermittent connection. You may want to do the same on the sensor connectors, but I don't think that would help given how the system works. After all that, I would see the dealer.

Not sure if it will help, but I just had a major service done on my 198K 2009 135 and they noticed that the rear headlight leveling sensor wire had stripped and was shorting. This was causing my lights to go up and down while driving. It was almost as if they were resetting. They just threw some shrink wrap on it and I haven't had the problem return. Not sure if this will help but it might be something else to look at.

Actually im having this exact issue with my AHL headlights and they DO NOT continuously level when driving under normal operation...ever! If they did then ive literally NEVER noticed since i bought the car brand new. Left to right, yes but not vertically while driving.

This is on an e90, yours should look similar. See if everything is connected correctly or if the sensor is damaged in any way.

I don't think they're supposed to move up and down while driving

There is also a sensor on the front axle. One for the front and one for the rear. What most commonly happens, is the little plastic linkage from the sensor to the suspension pops off or breaks.

IF the front sensor is ok... you might need to check for codes and look into the footwell module(FRM3)... which controls all the lights on the car.
