PSS durability / impact resistance low?

I have now cut, torn or destroyed 4 seperate PSS tires on my 135i on the wonderful streets of DC. From people with significant epxerience with this tire, are they very poor in terms of durability upon impact?

I live in LA and used every tire including the PSS and PS A/S 3s and the Michelins hold up very well. DC must have some gnarly potholes.

Yes, absolutely gnarly.

Owned a set myself with no problems. The past winter season left many roads in shambles so I would point the blame there.

What size tires are you running? What pressures are you running?

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that, like wheels and bicycle tires, lighter tires would tend to have more issues than heavier ones. PSS are quite light. Technology matters, but how much? Who can say?

Bridgestone performance tires tend to be heavy. Tirerack has weights for everything.

If you hit a pothole hard enough it will destroy any tire. Drive more carefully.

Atlanta likes to use metal plates to fix potholes. I have 15k or so on my rear 19/255x30 PSSs and no issues yet. I cracked three wheels and maybe 5 tires on my Porsche over 20 yrs, so far no issues on in 5.8 yrs with my One, but of course my Volks are helping in the cracked wheel issue. Sounds like you have terrible roads.

If you want to get rich fast, open a tire shop in DC. I couldn't believe the condition of the streets there when I was there last. No way I would live there without a beater to drive in the city.

PSS's are more prone to damage due to the softer belts in the sidewall used in construction. That said I ran my 265/245 set on my 128i from new to destroyed in 15k miles and 23 laps of the Nurburgring. They can hold up, but if you hit potholes hard, don't expect them to be as durable as a runflat tire.

I took out a ps2 and a rim in the DC area. I don't think any tire would have survived the hole I hit.

The 215's don't have a lot of rim protection. On my next set of tires (not much left of them now) I am going up to 225/40-18 in the front but keeping stock in the rear. That should dial out the under-steer (which is not noticeable in normal street driving anyway).

I have probably 6k on mine now. I don't drive on bad roads, but have hit some unavoidable potholes and a particularly bad one on the highway. I have a very stiff setup and they seem to be fine. I'd switch to a 17" if I were you

I'm finishing up with my second set. Other than puntures, I've never damaged a tire without also damaging a wheel so I don't blame the tires. On the whole, I think the PSSs have held up pretty well given how great they perform.

No issues here with my PSS set. I hit plenty of potholes this past spring.

I did have a pothole wreck a stock RFT, though it did its job getting me home on no air.
