Dealer Car Wash

Is it standard for a dealer to wash your car without asking when you bring it in for service? Brought mine in for an oil change... an hour later it was done but the car was washed. I'm annoyed. Now it's full of water spots and I have to spend the weekend detailing it... which I don't mind doing much... but I buffed it last summer and the paint flawless. Hopefully the water spots haven't etched. Had a good coat of wax so I'm not too concerned. I still think they should ask if you want your car washed rather than assume. Sorry for the rant.

it's pretty standard, you need to tell them to not wash your car when you bring it in

My dealer usually asks if I'd like, although I never mind. My car gets a wash only at oil change time, since it happens once an year, my car get clean once in a year too.

Have you not seen any of the horror story threads (with pics) around here? Apparently there are quite a few BMW places that have absolutely no clue how to care for a car.

+1

They may know how to wash a car, but when they dont care about that car do you think they're really going to put the effort into doing it properly?

My car came back from the service wash full of scratches! Looks like they used sand paper on it, like someone probably used the same dirty rag to wash multiple cars. All over the car the clear coat was scratched.
Not all dealer washes respect/appreciate your baby like you do.
1 week later after they detailed, wet sanded, and had the car back at the body shop, the car is still not like it was before, swirl marks on clear coat at different lighting angles.
Bottom line, personally I will NEVER let them wash my 1er again!
..btw, like the "do not wash" sign previous person mentioned, Im def doing that

I use a yellow sticky note on the IP to remind them, then tell the SA.

For those of you who say we're crazy for not wanting a free car wash, well just remember you get what you pay for!

There's a high school cheerleader squad giving free car washes down the street from me. I compare the free BMW wash to that, though BMW may change the water in their buckets a bit more often.

Why don't you come over and visit my dealer and let him wash your car for you? In fact, do it a couple of times because that will make it easier to have the whole car repainted.

Many BMW dealers have antiquated, poorly maintained car wash machines that do about the crappiest job possible. The one and only time these schmucks ran my car through one it ripped half of my 1Addicts sticker off the car and put a nice scuff on the rear bumper. The car looked like crap, but it had been "washed".

+1 on never letting the dealer wash your car.

To the op. Are the water spots on your car any worse than water spots you get from rain? Having to "Spend the weekend" detailing your car because of water spots seems odd to me. If my 1 gets rained on(ie. water spots) I usually spend an hour washing it and all is good.

Only sometimes. I normally avoid the rain droplets with our superior suspension, breaking, power.

Sorry you guys have had bad experiences. My dealer has been doing excellent hand washes on my BMWs for the last 10 years (including removing some nasty brake dust I allowed to get baked on the front wheels). Since we're paying for that service, why not take advantage of it?
