HDPE inspection, brakes
I want to do a HDPE but want to make sure my car will pass the tech inspection. In particular i'm concerned about the brake pads. Two clubs that I might do a HDPE with state the following about the pads:
"Brake pads/ shoes Good, with at least ¾ of pad material visible? (Not just OK)" or "Brake pads — at least 1⁄2 original thickness remaining" Now, i measured what i think to be the pad thickness to be 9mm, am i measuring it right? And does anyone know that the original thickness was for a 128i? I've searched everywhere and can't find this information! Last edited by Hops128i; 02-09-2013 at 11:32 PM. Reason: grammar |

9mm of pad material is fine. You were not including the metal backing plate right? Minimum pad material is 3mm. I think new they are around 12mm's.
For the brake rotors - the minimum thickness is stamped on the rotor's edge. It should be something like 25.5 mm. IF you rotors are less than the stamped min thickness replace them. IF they are thicker (new is around 27mm) than you are ok. These specs are just for theory. You have to rotate the brake rotor and look for the min thickness stamping. Also... if the edge of the brake rotor has a "lip" more than 2mm's, you should probably replace the rotors too. For a HPDE... you will want to have fresh brake fluid - changed and bled. Most organizers of HPDE will not let you run without fresh brake fluid signed off by a repair shop. Good Luck and have fun at the track! Dackel

That's plenty of pad for a 2 day event. The 3/4 pad requirement is SCCA. You won't really need that much, and they won't send you home because of it. If you have only 1/4 left, the track inspector might say you should keep on eye on it.
The 1/2 pad requirement sounds like BMWCCA. They're not as easy-going as SCCA, but I'm pretty sure you could do an SCCA event and still have enough pad left to pass BMW club inspection. |

thanks for the replies! I guess I haven't gone though much pad even though I have 35k miles on the car, but the indicator inside the car keeps saying I have 15k left for the last 25k, (I drive like 95% highway miles)

Im in the same boat on my 135i. I wanted to get the pads changed from the dealer on their suggested service inverval, but they wouldnt because there was still like 9mm of pad left at the 30k mile check. I also drive 90% highway over 90miles a day. I hope AutoX this season will help!!

That is plenty for an average track, but a good weekend at Laguna Seca will sure go through OE pads!
