Clear coat peeling/flaking from bumper

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the clear coat peeling/flaking off from the bumpers of their cars.

I've just noticed today that a piece (size of a 50c coin) of clear coat has started to peel off my front bumper.

I haven't hit anything and have always hand washed my car. No dints, scratches or any marks of any kind on the paint underneath or around the section peeling.

Taking the car to Brisbane BMW tomorrow to see what they say.

Any advise, similar experience and thoughts appreciated

that's unacceptable for a $15000 car, let alone one from BMW.

Had Brisbane BMW look at the car this morning. They took pictures to sent to BMW HQ to see if they have had similar reports. As the peeling/flaking has no obvious signs of what may have caused the damage (stone damage, dint etc) apart from that its peeling off, BMW are going to arrange for the clear coat for the whole front bumper to be repainted.

Thanks to everyone that commented on my post

WTF? More issues with the 1er. That East German factory needs to get out of "Trabant" mode. They are no longer in the Eastern Bloc.

Good that they are fixing it.

BMW has the worse paint job ive ever seen. My car has chips all over the front hood/ by tires. I just watched how a lamborghini is made. Their paint job is so nice that there is no orange peeling like our crappy BMW. My next car will be a lamborghini when im old and can afford it!!!!

My car has soooo much f***ing orange peel i swear i thought it had panel work done prior to purchase.

The original paint on my 60 year old jag is smoother and better finished then the 1'er

Ouch

Christine has severe orange peel on the top of her front bumper (the bodywork above the number plate). Luckily as she's white you can only see it when in correct light and looking for it.

Any chance the paint problem is related to this thread?

the paint on my 130i must be 'soft' or something.. because it chips so easy.. the front bar is covered in chips from hitting bugs at 100kmph.. likewise all my other cars haven't experienced this, not even a mitsubishi at half the price

Unfortunately, today's automotive manufacturers are required to use more environmentally friendly paint. It's effects are more orange peel. You can give thanks to the environmentalists for that one.

On a side note: Did you know Porsche pays a fine every year because they do not use environmentally friendly paint? I don't remember what the amount is but it is substantial.

Yeah it's funny that smash repairers can get a better finish these days on repaired panels then those that are factory finished.

I am still a massive fan of lead based paints (as long as i am not painting it). A shame they are no longer available otherwise i'd be all too happy to pay extra for paint applied in a safe and environmentally protected fashion.

You can have them wet sand the whole car and put a new clear on . Or - you can get them to put a overcoat of clear as well. I have gone to the trouble of asking if it could be done, but didn't ask how much it is going to cost.

The funniest thing is that the repairer told me when they repair BMW, Mercedes, they have to match the orange peeling of the rest of the car.
