Why the big delay? You'd think they would have stock this time round given the previous sales history of the iphone and delays it caused

My brother got one through his work as a business mobile within the 3rd or 4th day of release. It's not bad but not all apple made it out to be either

My wife is waiting for hers from Optus, she ordered it the Sunday following its release.

She also received a bill for this month when they said the first month would be free as she has not received the phone yet...

I presume you are waiting for a 32gb?

I went to JB @ South Wharf at lunchtime on Wednesday and picked up a 16gb on Telstra contract, no preorders or anything, impulse buy. They had 4 or 5 in stock of the 16gb, but I went back the next day and they were all sold out. My first iPhone, pretty neat .

typical of apple to not have enough stock of the iphone...even if it is a product with known reception issues.

Rang up and ordered from my local dealer. They said best for me to go in and signed up as they said it might arrive sooner, but didn't have time. So, I am on their list - but not signed up until last week.... if that make sense.

I walked into the Doncaster Apple store 2 sundays ago, and walked out with a 32G bought outright. No line, no waiting list....

Somewhat ironically I actually work for a carrier

Can someone explain to me why you would buy an iphone outright for $900 odd, then have to pay pre-paid every month which works out to be more expensive than a plan plus you have to pay up front...?

Some people travel a lot and don't want plans. When I was in uni prepaid would have been better as I was way for months at a time and I would still be paying my plan - cash is always tight at uni! Plus Optus pre-paid is actually awesome value and includes international calls. Also it allows you the freedom to upgrade phones or switch carriers. Even now I still do 12 month contracts so I can be ready for next iPhone!

There are month to month postpaid plans out there. Also, most contracts with phone lock you into 24 months, if you want to go on a lower plan then you're also paying an upfront fee + monthly fee on top of your plan.

In the case of my gf, her phone is on a work account and the only handset they provide are blackberries which she hates. So we buy her iphone's outright.

I am specifically wondering about expensive phones... When you have to pay $900 outright just for a phone, vs a plan which over two years costs $1350 or so. Surely even if you didn't use it for a couple months then it would still work out to be similar cost?

Obviously the freedom of changing carriers and phones is a plus, but it to me it just seems like a more expensive route. Especially since you have to pay up front, which I would have thought for a uni student it would be even harder...

Fair point BBK, it does work out if you look at it like that. However, most carriers charge you extra monthly for the higher end handsets, especially back then.

Another sticking point with prepaid plans is that you have a lot more control over expenditure. The cap plans have really high call rates and after you go over the cap it can get out of hand really quickly.

I bought mine from an Apple Store the day it was released. I bought a 16gb and outright, as work pays for my SIM.

I have also had 3 dropped calls while in the car, which is more than I recall with the 3GS. Could be coincidence or not, only time will tell. Am on Telstra.

Oh yeah, the volume issue's fixed - you know, when you went to use the phone it was really quiet and you had to turn it up, not any more.

simonb, with the 3 dropped calls, were you using the "death grip" while driving your car??? or was it hooked up to your blue tooth and you weren't touching it?
from people i've talked to with the iphone4, it seems like the whole "death grip" thing has been totally blown out of proportion by the media, as per usual.
