Use it .. greatest name ever. If this thing is as fun to drive as an 135i its going to be a massive hit. I love the 1 series platform and think the naming convention would be perfect.

This is the turning point for BMW as a brand and family. Lets see where it goes... Money and profits or history and tradition. they already ruined most of the second part.

M1 for two reasons
-Its the M variant of the 1 series it properly follows convention. The original M1 wasn't a 1 series, it was the first M car so they called it M1. That convention changed a long long time ago, and I don't think people will confuse 1 for the other. -If used, odds shrink to basically nil that they'll half ass it. Its a very important letter for them. As a potential buyer if I'm going to drop 50k on a 1 it better be wearing an M badge and it better be worthy of it.

For consistency sake call it an M1. This will sell more cars for BMW now. I don't think that BMW care about the original M1 as they are not making any money from them now.

No doubts the car will perform in its own league but lets not get carried away with the nomenclature. An M1 is a BMW produced between 1977-1981 for homologations in Group 4 and Group 5 racing purposes. What this means the car's background is fundamental history to the BMW M cars as a whole. They car was a failure but it launched BMW M. It should not be altered to satisfy a need that can be solved with many options like M-Drive 1, M135is, M135i, Mtii, 135tii, or M-Drive 135itiiis for consistency sakes. If they were going to build a car to be the sucessor of the 2002, why didn't they name it the New 2002? I guess they didn't wanted to disrupt a company milestone just to make a few people happy. They then named the 1-Series. They should do the same for a car that started it all for the most powerful letter in the alphabet.

This should have been posted in the BMW General forum. You're going to get a lot of bias here.

M1 is the only logical choice and as you said yourself the M1 was produced in 1977, if tradition is more important than progress why don't we forget about the name of this new car and cry about how it isn't drawn by horses. |

Just read first page and don't know if it's been said, but I read an article that it will NEVER be called M1 as to not confuse it with the super car, and they were entertaining the idea of 1M and that's what they think it will be for now. Someone correct me if im wrong plz, but it also 2011/2012?
Thanks, I |

I'd rather they find a different moniker. The M1 badge is widely respected. The E82 is fat looking, front-engined, and hardly worth being considered as legendary. They could call it a 1series Sdrive35is for all I care, but it doesn't deserve the M1 badge.
An M1 should be mid-engined and based upon a chassis that's more capable than the E82's. It needs to be unique and eye catching.

well, if they really call this 1 series "M1", we will surely know that there isn't any future plans for the real BMW supercar, which is a big NO!

It's that being owner of an e30 M3 and being a past owner of an e28 M5 (M88 engine) makes it hard for me to accept the name M1 in a car outside the supercar category. Tradition and progress can both advance parallel to the other. But to hell with it. They'll name it the M1 so lets hope for a larger fuel tank!

A more fitting name for the BMW if it ever produced would be the M8. Where the 8 series has always been reserved the top of the range BMWs. The other option would be the M9, which I believed the CS concept was going to be the 9 series. BMW is a company that moves forward including marketing. Otherwise we would still have 2002s around now.

Should be called an M1. As for the supercar that no one knows about, and tradition,blah,blah,blah...if BMW ever goes the supercar route again, just call the thing "The M".....Just "M". If it's that damn good it doesn't even need a number. BMW would be stupid to hold the M1 moniker for a car that was basically a prototype anyway.

Just throwing this out there...ummm...do you have any idea what you are talking about? The M1 was a race car that was only sold to the public so that it could race, ie the same reason that cars such as Ferraris exist in the first place. You wouldnt call a Ford GT40 a prototype, would you?
