Powder coating M-Sport rims
I've been looking to get matte black rims for a while and I noticed that a local shop (GTA) was offering powder coating for $250CND (regularly $500) for the full set of rims (tire removal and remounting is extra). Just wanna get people's input, anyone done it? How much was the cost? Did the rims turn out as expected? Is it just better to wastes weekend and plastidip them instead?
Thanks! |

I got my 261's powder coated in satin black a few weeks ago and am more than happy with the outcome. It cost me $600 USD out the door and I was more than happy to give it to them. Sounds like thats a great deal, I say take advantage of it. No one wants to plastidip every couple weeks!

I just got mine powdercoated 2 weeks ago. It would have been $300 if they were in perfect condition but they had to repair some curb rash and the final price was $360+tax. I have the 261M Sport wheels, I chose satin black. The shop did not even offer tire removal or mounting so it made logistics complicated but that's still a great price.

Ugh.. I wish i could get wheels cleaned up and re-powder coated for $360. I got quoted over $200/wheel to clean up VERY light scratches and rash. Frustrating.

OP - That's a good price for powder coating four wheels. Shops around Southern California generally charge $300-400 for the set on average I'd say. Powder coating is really durable, and if the shop knows what they are doing, you should be happy with the outcome.
You could always strip them down, and clean up the rash yourself, then send them out to get coated. Shouldn't take longer than a weekend to clean them up!

I'm also in the same boat. Did you guys have them put a layer of clear over the powder coat layer? I have someone suggesting that I do that but then I'm reading it's not necessary. I also can't decide on the finish I want. Black-Matte, Satin or Glossy. I have dropped the wheels off and they are going to show me some of the options. I don't think I want a full matte but would prefer something in the middle. I'm not sure if that would be Satin or not. What finish did you decide on for 261 Wheels? Any Pics?

There is no need to clear coat with powder coating, it would just be a waste of money IMO. |

Thanks Cakeater! I have AW too so that really helps me visualize what it would look like. I agree that Satin would be a good option. In the end I don't really want full matte but don't really want full glossy.

Plastidip does not even compare to powder coating! The finishes are completely different and powder coating is extremely durable.

Semi Gloss Black 261 Wheel
I finally settled on a semi gloss that comes close to matching the shadowline trim. I'm really happy with the results. It's hard to see the gloss because it was overcast when I took the picture.
